What is fill flash exactly?

God its been so long since ive posted here... too long.

HKYStormFront 03-12-2012 03:21 PM

exactly what it sounds like, a flash to fill in shadows. plenty of videos on youtube about how to use onboard flash as well as off camera flash. give em a peak and if you have any further questions, i'll be happy to (attempt) to answer

You need to go Premium for that.

When you say "onboard" do you mean pop up flash? Pop up flashes should be abolished. They're terrible in every sense of the word.

I just left the Premium lounge. That place can be downright frightening. Always a pleasant experience!

yes and no. onboard i typically intend to mean the pop up flash and yes it's absolute garbage. i consider a hot shoe mounted (top mount) flash to be "off camera" since the best way to use them is off camera and fired either wired or remotely.

The only useful thing it does is trigger my speedlight remotely and make people I hate look ugly.

I use hot shoe mounted flashes all the time. If you know how to use them, they're great. Although, 90% of the time I've got a pocketwizard or other wireless trigger on there.

OK, hoping to get some input on a purchase decision.

I shoot with a D3100. I have the 18-55 kit lens, the 35mm/1.8, and the 55-200 'kit' lens. Nothing serious, but I do have most of the focal lengths I need covered (save for an extreme wide angle)

I am looking to purchase my wife a camera, probably either a D5100 or another D3100. I think I have been convinced to invest the extra couple bucks into the D5100.

I am trying to make a lens decision though. We will be sharing glass, so some overlap may be helpful, vs what would normally be advised.

Thoughts I've had:

18-105: good walkaround lens that she could just toss on and be happy for 99% of use.

50mm/1.8: heard good things, love the 35mm prime I have...a 50 would probably be great

85mm /1.8: heard great things about this lens, a little worried about dropping $500 on a prime

tamron 10-24: would love a wide angle lens. heard mixed review

Most of her shots are either of landscapes, pictures of our dog, or close-ups of things like flowers.

Curious to hear thoughts/inputs...and thanks for your help.

I think the 18-105 - it is one lens I wish Canon had, though I enjoy the 15-85 very much.

Otherwise I think you might want a 2.8 zoom like a 18-50 or 70-200, but the I don't like primes very much. Until Canon comes out with an upgraded 35mm :)
