that penguin shot with the out of focus foreground is awesome lol
|
haha yeah i liked that one as well.
Now that im at work they all seem abit under exposed. I need to calibrate my home monitor and trust the histogram. |
only by a little bit IMO. to me, i'd just touch up a few of the penguin photos and call it a day.

Damn i love that car.. So was this was taken from another car moving along side with slow shutter speed? Also was it hand held or do you have some sort of setup to hold the cam steady in the other car.

Correct, taken from another car with a slower shutter speed... I think this was in the 1/60-1/100 range, can't quite remember. Handheld. Canon 40d and Sigma 10-20 lens. |
nitex- nice shots! i like the penguin shot too. man you got yet another new lens??! :D
parker- very nicely done. your picts tell a story. (i already said that but i'll just put that in there again. hahaha ) |
GTHAUS- nice shot! do you use VR when you're doing rolling shots? :)

It was an experiment to see if i preferred the old prime over the new zoom. And honestly i think im convinced. I will be getting the new 300mm F4 because it has much less color shift/aberration and will be sharper still. The rest of the range will be covered with a 70-200 F2.8 + 24-70 once i save up the cash  Oh and now i really want a celestron! Can hook up your DSLR to new telescopes and take some seriously deep space shots of nebula's, galaxies, planets etc. And you just tell it what you want to look at and it auto-finds your target. Take 1000 shots and overlay them in a stacking program.. fun! - Im never going to get FI for the Z at this rate... |

I think we were moving around 30, MAYBE 35-40... i think the speed limit is 35 on that road. I can pan fine with IS mode 2 on my 70-200 2.8 IS Canon lens. I found out that Mode 1 is for all shake, up down, sideways, ect so the IS tries to correct for it. Mode 2 is for up and down shake, not side to side, so it's much better for panning cause it's not trying to fight your side to side movement. BUT, that's just what I was told, never looked it up to verify anything lol. |
that is correct^^ it does make a difference, i found myself fighting the IS system on my 100-400 when trying to do panning shots. ended up just turning the whole system off :(

i'm sure it works for taking sharp pictures when you need longer shutters of still scenes. just for panning shots i felt like i was fighting it. mostly because i never seem to be panning straight from left to right. there's always some vertical motion involved
|
^ With out a tripod, hand holding a long lens + small dslr body with out a grip and no VR/IS can make for a very shake picture unless you bump ISO and shutter speed.
In the end different lenses in the VR line or IS line will have varying degrees of performance. Its definitely a good thing to have for the most part when hand holding. If you have a tripod then it seems to be better off. Or in this case panning with slow shutter speeds to catch moving targets and blur background  My old prime has niether VR/IS or Auto focus. So my zoo trip was interesting. The tiger and bear shots were taken by hand. Eagle and most of the penguins were taken on my tripod. I think the first few penguin were by hand also. |
Monopod would be better.

what i'm working on for my next shoot... http://hphotos-sjc1.fbcdn.net/284824...3_720970_n.jpg 599 GTO (notice the white ferrari i shot previously in the background) |
I'm for warmer - on my (uncalibrated) monitor it looks like a cloudy, chilly day. Unless that's how you want it to look :)

Hell all, if anyone is interested ive been somewhat busy.
New Macro shots Insect Macro - a set on Flickr Trip to another Zoo Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium - a set on Flickr And last week group ride, in which i got out ahead far enough to take pics hah! Ben howard ride - a set on Flickr |
good stuff! your white balance looks a hair bluish on my crappy work laptop, anyone else notice that? it's hard for me to tell honestly. i tend to like pictures more on the yellow side of the WB slider personally tho

well i usually shoot RAW. this allows for the most adjustment imo. if you'd like to set a custom WB there's an easy way. cut a styrofoam cup in half vertically and stick the bottom end over the lens of your camera so it acts like a lens cap. aim for something that gives you about 50% shadow and 50% light (the dark side of a building usually works if shooting up towards the sky). go to your menu and hit custom white balance then go to that picture and hit "OK". i did this in savannah a few years ago and it worked like a champ!
|
i will say that around here, WB of 5400-5700 is usually what i stick to in broad daylight, closer to 6k for "magic hour"
|
Nice shots Nitex. Really making me want macro. I agree w HKY that I like my pics on the yellow side as well.

I wonder if the older F4 300mm prime would have anything to do with this or if its all WB settings in the camera. I have replaced the old with a new F4 300mm, still no IS but AF and much much better CA with the new lens. I have yet to do any outings with it other than the the harbor shots i have. And most of those seem blueish. I will try your WB trick  Still using my 105mm 2.8 nikkor for macro though. And Alchemy, macro is with out a doubt my favorite thing right now. There is usually something interesting to capture right in your own back yard :icon17: |
nah that's mostly having to do with the camera and it's perceived "guess" of what the correct WB is
|
First attempt at bracketing and HDR. My kit lens was used as its the only wide angle i have at the moment so the shot is quite soft. Plus it was the first time i used CS5 lol... Im looking at the tokina 11-16, or 12-24 to replace my wide angle needs.
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6209/...fcd1cbeb_b.jpg Saw some salmon jumping, but it was to dark to catch them. Going back for another attempt this weekend. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6189/...9d4ef7e0_b.jpg |
i think i know someone selling a 12-24, i'll let ya know.
