In those days, the 350z's were high quality cars that cost the same as a low quality shyt-box stang. It was just as fast and the only other respectable "fast RWD's" was the M3, GTO and corvette which cost a lot more ($33k-$50k. The z had performance not too far behind those cars and were really cheap.
Most entry 350z's could be had for less than $25k new or used with all options. The number of azzhats in the Z reflect the lack of good sports cars at the time that were affordable. Rx-8's took a long time to get respect as well. It was considered a downgrade from the Rx-7.
