Infiniti Q50 (new G37), first look and sound. (Video inside)

Infiniti is celebrating 3M Facebook friends and decided to drop this video on us. The light-up sequence looks striking. You have to play the video though to hear the car rev...it's definitely NOT a VQ37 in there. It could be a 3.0L turbo.

Infiniti Q50 Teaser Reveals Headlight, Exhaust and Engine Clip | Wide Open Throttle Auto

kenchan 12-28-2012 09:16 PM

what's the french guy up to this time?

SS_Firehawk 12-28-2012 10:04 PM

Sounds like a V6 to me, with an exhaust note that sounds like a combination of the DE and VHR.

b1adesofcha0s 12-28-2012 10:13 PM

I like what I see/hear

zguynate 12-28-2012 10:38 PM

Man thats awesome! I cant wait for Jan 14th lol.

bigsix 12-29-2012 02:13 AM

yeah, the Exhaust/Engine tone sounds muffled (i.e. Turbochargers @ work) . . .

Cell 12-29-2012 07:56 AM

If the next gen Z is looks aggressive, is lighter than the current gen, has turbos and at least 350HP then I may trade my nismo.

redline727 12-29-2012 08:12 AM

I don't think Infiniti would have changed the badge to a Q50 if it was a 3.0 liter. It has always represented displacement. They would be changing years of badging tradition to name it a Q50 with a 3.0 V6. I also find it unlikely the new engine is a 5.0 V8 so what's the play here? Is the new Z going to be called the 500Z now too??? Or are they just gonna break tradition for sake of not going down in badge numbers even though they drop displacement? See if they just left the Fairlady name there wouldn't be an issue. But we Americans can't associate names with cars we need numbers haha. And Infiniti could have used the skyline name like in Europe and the GTR would still be the GTR. Then no confusion over badging when designing new engines.

Lets play detective

http://blog.caranddriver.com/wp-cont...ip-626x382.jpg

"Mercedes-Benz will be expanding its engine lineup with the addition of a 3.0-liter, twin-turbo V6 powerplant with at least 335 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.

The twin-turbo V6 powerplant will join the German automaker’s current naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 offering, though it’s believed that the twin-turbo engine will not only offer more performance, but better fuel efficiency. The current 3.5-liter V6 features 302 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque.

It is expected that Mercedes will outfit its E-Class models, the CLS, S-Class, ML, and GL with the new twin-turbo engine while the naturally aspirated engine will be found in the C-Class coupe and SLK roadster."

Looks like this engine with 335hp and 295 tq with a little more boost would be a perfect Z engine.

Now listen to this audi twin turbo six cylinder;
Sam's V6 3.2L Audi TT with Sports Quad Tipped Exhaust. - YouTube

sounds similar to that video engine.

Adding all the clues together it's safe to say the next G/Z engine will be a 6 turbo with ~350hp ~300tq

Times change, the 50 and 60 models will no longer have a moniker thats related to displacement. 50=sedan 60=coupe.

"The current 3.5-liter V6 features 302 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque".

If this is true???? That means there's up to 250 Cheaply priced untapped hp just sitting there in the engine-bay. I hope Nissan mates proper manual and auto transmissions to something like this. If this engine is going in the Z? I believe this will be one of two engines for the Z? And I'm expecting an altima coupe(silvia substitute)variant. The Z is going to go upmarket by a large margin with the Turbo engine.

Expect some type of 4 banger turbo or NAv6 Z in the low 30k range and a turbo Z in the low to mid 40's range.

Actually you are correct, I now remember that post where they mentioned the Z will be downsizing in price/size/luxury.

I mean if they go back to the Z33 interior they could afford the benz power train, in a new chassis with ~3000lbs and 350hp I think would be a lot of fun.

redline727 12-29-2012 03:08 PM

Well whatever they end up badging it with if it indeed is going back to a twin turbo v6 and I can get it for under 40k im in. Not the G though ill wait for the Z.

LakeShow 12-29-2012 08:33 PM

Lets wait and see the official unveiling, I'm very curious of the engine.

Looks like they're going with Generic BMW/Merc/Lexus front grille and headlights.

Like everything except the front.

MC 01-12-2013 10:19 PM

not that it looks the same but for some reason the front reminds me of BRZ mixed with the old school IS300 i dunno

waiting to see the Q60 coupe at some point in the future

MC 01-12-2013 10:20 PM

what do you guys like better this or the new IS?

Did you just post the same car twice? :stirthepot:

nuTinmuch 01-12-2013 11:20 PM

Love it.

SS_Firehawk 01-13-2013 12:21 AM

IS looks like the front of a melted Audi. I like the Q50. I think the only thing that feels out of place are those chipmonk cheeks on the bottom corners of the front bumper. I think that could have been integrated better.

Caustic 01-13-2013 02:16 AM

Nissan/Infinity are trying something. Not sure if I dig it though. But I really like that interior.

It really does look like they bit off the new IS front end. Not a good idea.

One_Quick_Z 01-13-2013 04:26 AM

Love how people say it looks ugly, but yet it has the same aggresive styling as Lexus/BMW which are the most popular lux brands out there lol.

DAN

FairladyZ 01-13-2013 04:32 AM

Holy crap the iS has to stop with those LEDs.

Audi's LEDs still looks the best

I think the new BMW and Lexus cars are ugly too :tiphat:

JungleZ 01-13-2013 09:07 AM

Would not buy, the exterior isn't as sexy as the 370z. My next car has to look better than the curent z I don't care if new cars are faster looks still matter alot.

Redglare 01-13-2013 12:17 PM

did drivetrain info leak too?

speedworks 01-13-2013 01:24 PM

Front is terrible, and even worse on the IS. They look equally ugly.

Cmike2780 01-13-2013 01:41 PM

Front looks wierd from certain angles. I hope they do a better job with the coupe

AlphaSnacks 01-13-2013 02:42 PM

It looks too much like the Hyundai Sonata.

Jordo! 01-13-2013 04:59 PM

Like it better than the IS, but not better than current G front end... it's okay.

Also waiting to see the coupe -- also trying to imagine what the next Z will look like if it borrows some styling cues.

AlphaSnacks 01-14-2013 10:33 AM

So the VQ37 is a carryover.

VQ35 Hybdrid is optional with 354HP/465TQ, 7AT

Additional engines will debut at the end of the year. Infinit filed a patent last year for G30T. So 3.0L Turbo is still hoped to be in the decks

daisuke149 01-14-2013 10:37 AM

it may have the lexus / bmw look but i dont like them. so its not good.

the back looks like the Sonata.

Main thing i do not like is that they are using carryover engines. : / which they will change mid cycle and PO some owners.

Cmike2780 01-14-2013 12:20 PM

The carryover powertrain is really a let down. One thing worth noting though is that it has direct-injection? Seems odd that it doesn't have a power bump if they did add it.

I still don't get why change the Infiniti nomenclature. I get the fact that the number allocation could get confusing, but this isn't the right approach. A G20 Turbo or G30 Turbo sounds a lot better than Q50. I dunno, it sounds more....feminine. I think they should have kept the SUV's with a JX or FX designation, followed by a number...sounds a lot cooler.

It kind of makes you wonder what plans Nissan has for the next Z. I hope to god they just call it a "Z" and leave it at that...much like taking the "skyline" out from the GT-R.

My guess on the power bump is that, along with the DI, they retuned the car for much better gas mileage, maybe it will get 30+mpg's, thus not leaving much for a power increase?

Maybe the power increase will be in the Q60 coupe??? Maybe they want to reaffirm the sporty intentions of the coupe by having seperate power numbers?

I like the look of the rear, the front is awful, the side looks like a "luxurified" side of the new Altima. I have seriously mixed feelings about this package as a whole. Hopefully its true the Z will be a different car losing it's kinship with this one.

That said, The infiniti IPL being a 6 figure priced car based on something that looks like this concerns me. It feels like nissan is losing a foothold in the sports car market like mitsubishi and mazda.

Mitsubishi has an AWD sedan as there PREMIUM power sports car. We have an AWD coupe as a PREMIUM power sports car. Mazda killed high hp (RX-7TT) for lightweight (Rx-8) for RWD. Is Japan giving up on powerful RWD 2 door/2/4seat automobiles in the non premium market???
Both cars are great cars but not making any huge impacts in performance. The Z, who impacted the market with the last 3 iterations of the z seems to be slumping out???? Can it be true. With no substantial info on the upcoming Z... My faith is compromised. This new G is doing nothing in terms of making me feel confident of the Z's future. :wtf2: That said, knowing the z is going for G independence... Will it be the better sports car or will it go from Cayman Fighter to BRZ fighter???

EDIT:

I just did the interactive tour of the Q50. Not bad. It looks better in film than in pics. Also the hybrid gets more HORSEPOWER and DUAL CLUTCH TRANSMISSION. So the Z may see DCT???
