I did a research project on this... YES we are getting screwed, BIG time, and most of their cars are turbo diesel... The highest miles per tank was done in the US with a 4 banger TDI VW Jetta... Second is a 3 banger TDI VW Polo whatever, lol The 3 cylinder got better MPG, but the acceleration is SLOW...
