Yeah, it’s a facepalm. But it isn’t quite as crazy as some people think…

Stick with me, here:

First things first: Why the Cougar? (Keep in mind: That Cougar model is essentially a 2-door version of my Ford Contour, so I’m familiar with its details): As it turns out, the Cougar’s wheel base is almost *exactly* the same as the Veyron – which helps in creating realistic replica proportions. Take a closer look at the pics. Unlike many replica projects (I’m looking at you, Faux Fierarri projects), the overall shape and structure is really pretty well done.

Next: Drivetrain. No, it will never be a 1000+ HP Bugatti engine. The stock 170HP V6 was good for its day – but the Contour SVT got 200HP out of the same engine. Meanwhile, the Duratec 3.0 is a bolt-in replacement. The Noble M400 got 425HP out of this engine with two turbos – you could probably do better than that today. Does FWD bug you? Simple: Find a wrecked Jag X-Type (shares chassis with Contour!) and pull the AWD parts. Most things will bolt right in after you shorten the rear driveshaft. Bingo: Now you’ve got a 425+HP, AWD Veyron replica.

So: Yes, he wants stupid money for what is currently a fiberglass project.

Personally, I think it would be fun to create a Cougar sleeper: Stick with the stock body, but go nuts with the drivetrain options that are out there (another plus: Many European Ford Mondeo performance goodies will bolt on). It would certainly make for fun stoplight encounter surprises…
