Safety regulations.

I don't buy that "we can't make cars much lighter because of safety regulations" crap. If safety regs. cause a need for added weight, how does Lotus get away with a 2100 lb car with 200hp?

It is safety regulations, and to make it the same weight or lighter requires more expensive equipment which raise the price.

There are rumours that the FR-S might be around 2200 lbs, but don't take my word for that.

Not in a million years. A 2010 Miata weighs in at over 2400 lbs.

The concept 1 car supposedly weighed in at 1000KG -- which is about 2200 lbs, but there's no way that will make it into production -- I dunno whether that even made it into concept 2. I'd be happy with 2700lbs. Given today's weights, that's a lightweight car
