2001 BMW 7 series audio install

Well this is very exciting for me. Thursday I received a message asking if I would like to do an install on a 2001 BMW 740. After talking to him for two days I took a ride up to him on Saturday to meet him and the car. After him reading about me and my work he had no problem handing the keys over to take it home. He left Monday for a 2 week vacation.

Enough with that story, time to talk about the install.

Goodies include

SQA-4100 - CDT Audio 4 Channel Amplifier

Q 1200.1 - Image Dynamics 1-Channel 1200 Watt Amplifier

IDQ12V2.D2 - Image Dynamics 12" IDQ $149.99 x 2

130CVX - Focal 5.25 " Polyglass Coaxial Speakers

Stinger Pro 3 Series 6 Channel

Head rest tv's

Kicker 12 Guage S series 150ft

Kicker PKD1

FOCAL 165VR3 3 WAY COMPONENT SET

Dynamat 10455 Xtreme Bulk Pack 9 Sheets

This install will very much help my skills and expand them to fiberglass and custom boxes.

I will update this thread daily with new work and pictures.

It is basically 13,000 dollars worth of performance upgrades from the dealer and makes it the big boy of the 7 series before you get into the m3's

vipor 03-02-2010 02:48 PM

Ah cool. Never even knew there was an M7. Maybe this is just that but different because it's a boat.

bigaudiofanat 03-02-2010 02:50 PM

Sort of like an M it is fast I will say that.

vipor 03-02-2010 02:54 PM

Yeah they're surprising. I've had my hands on a couple. Lots of work have fun

bigaudiofanat 03-03-2010 02:22 PM

Speakers finally came in.

vipor 03-03-2010 02:25 PM

ooo 3ways

I prefer the way focals used to look... Not that you see them in the car usually.

bigaudiofanat 03-03-2010 03:56 PM

Yes they are 3 ways, I hope this weekend I can start installing them. the tweeter and 4 inch mid already have a space in the door. The woofer however will be fiberglassed into the kick panel.

Today I got a little bit done, got another piece of the sub box fitted to the trunk, as it is not a straight forward square trunk it takes some time.

vipor 03-03-2010 04:48 PM

At least you won't have to work around trunk springs in this car

Kind of weird that the door speakers aren't bigger. Crazy aftermarket stereos.

Are you doing like 1/2 the trunk with the box or all of it?

bigaudiofanat 03-03-2010 04:55 PM

It is pretty much going to be the back board is going to be where the 2 12's are going to be. The new floor is 3 inches above from the old one allowing both amps to be flush mounted into it. Thus allowing a little more than half of the trunk space to remain. The other thing is the rear deck speakers will be removed totally and new ones installed in the rear doors where there is already pre existing ones.

bigaudiofanat 03-07-2010 07:01 PM

With other stuff going on I still was able to get the JL clean sweep in.

Started out taking the panels off.

http://i483.photobucket.com/albums/r...l/100_1687.jpg

Wrapped the JL's wires up to clean up the look.

http://i483.photobucket.com/albums/r...l/100_1688.jpg

vipor 03-07-2010 07:39 PM

How much current is available from the factory amp wiring? How much does the JL pull?

bigaudiofanat 03-07-2010 07:57 PM

Not much at all, all the JL clean sweep does it analyze and clean the signal and drop it to low level for the new amps.

vipor 03-07-2010 08:02 PM

Ah cool I looked for it but couldn't find it. Nice looking product.

bigaudiofanat 03-08-2010 04:32 PM

Today i worked on the kick panels. The reason for this is there is no stock location for a 6.5 inch speaker in the door. Also this will help imaging a bit by having them facing the drive and passenger.

Drilled holes to help the fiberglass hold to the stock panel.

Laying down the foil and tape to protect the carpet.

http://i483.photobucket.com/albums/r...l/100_1691.jpg

http://i483.photobucket.com/albums/r...l/100_1692.jpg

While that was curing I took off the door panel to take a look at the mid and tweeters.

The owner said that the speakers were upgraded but he did not know what they were. All that was upgraded was the tweeter.
http://i483.photobucket.com/albums/r...l/100_1693.jpg

http://i483.photobucket.com/albums/r...l/100_1694.jpg

Have to make a bracket to hold the smaller mid but will be well worth it.

The new tweeter

bigaudiofanat 03-08-2010 05:02 PM

Still waiting on the subs and amps. Speaker wire should be here tomorrow so I can at least get 2 of the 3 speakers installed in the front and the two in the rear doors.

bigaudiofanat 03-09-2010 03:51 PM

speedfreak28 03-11-2010 02:45 PM

that box looks too big for those IDQ's, they dont like much more than 1 cubic ft. How come he went with the V2 IDQs? Be careful with that amp and those subs in a box that size.

tbonesteak 03-11-2010 04:00 PM

yah the box looks hugeee!

bigaudiofanat 03-11-2010 04:41 PM

Probably will trim it tomorrow if it is to big.
