NIO EP9 kills Nurburgring lap time with 6:45:9

Last week we told you NIO, the electric car start-up from China, took its super low-production EP9 supercar to the Nurburgring and was able to set an extremely fast 6:45:9 lap time around the Nordschleife, making it faster than any other production car around the track. The company's just released a video of the run, and holy moly does this car look quick.

The 6:45 time comes almost two months after the EP9 set an already fast 7:05 time on the 'Ring back in March. Convinced the car could go faster, NIO went back to the track on Friday and laid down the lap you see here. The EP9 beat out cars like the Huracan Performante, 918 Spyder, and even the Radical SR8LM.

Peter Dumbreck, the man behind the wheel, is an accomplished DTM and endurance racer, most famous for launching his Mercedez-Benz CLR into the air and into the woods during the 1999 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Though the 1360-horsepower EP9 is street-legal, whether it can be considered a production car is up for debate. Only seven examples have been built so far, each carrying a price tag of around $1.48 million. NIO told us that the EP9 is not street-legal in the US as of now, but the firm is working on homologating the car for our streets.
