Default Bay Area Run - July 9th, 2011

Bay area Z owners and any other performance car enthusiasts. Please join us for a tour of the San Francisco Bay area roads.

We'll start in Livermore in the morning and end up on the peninsula after dinner. But you're welcome to join or leave as you like along the way. The plan is to drive, so come prepared to move.

If you have an FRS radio, please bring it so drivers can stay in touch if we get split up. We'll use channel 11 and monitor channel 4 in Livermore and Saratoga.

The route will cover Mt. Hamilton, Skyline Dr, and CA-84. We'll avoid CA-92 and Half Moon Bay as they are often crowded and slow on summer weekends.

Google Map of the route

We'll meet at the Livermore Costco on Airway Blvd in the morning around and leave at 9:30am.

Plan to eat lunch around noon in San Jose near Capital Square Mall (probably Wienerschnitzel across the street where there is plenty of parking in the Mervyns parking lot.)

411 Capitol Avenue
San Jose, CA 95133

After lunch, we'll cruise over to Saratoga and stop for people to meet up.

Meet in the St. Andrews Episcopal Church parking lot
13601 Saratoga Avenue
Saratoga, CA 95070

If that's full, meet in the Saratoga Public library lot across the street.

We'll leave Saratoga at 2:00pm and travel Skyline, Pescadero Creek, Stage Road, and CA-84.

We'll stop in San Gregorio for a stretch and snack.

And finish up with dinner at Heidi's Pies in Foster City for those headed back to the East Bay.

Hope to see you on the road.

And with the show judging complete at 1:00pm, those who go could still join us in Saratoga for the second leg of the trip.

Default That was fun!

Wow, that was amazing...

Starting with Mines road was great. Nice warmup for some of the later sections. And just when we got a little tired of all the blind turns, it straightened out and we actually got to test some "top speeds" before the climb up Mt Hamilton.

Mt Hamilton was frustrating because it was so twisty that I needed 2nd gear for the turns, and couldn't get enough speed on the in-between bits to get up to 3rd gear. But what a nice problem to have...

I'm told there are regular tours of the observatory on top of Mt Hamilton. We stopped to admire the scenery, but didn't take a tour. The view of Silicon Valley spread out below us was amazing.

We took it "easy" on the way down the mountain and lunched at Wienershnitzel.

Stopping for Starbucks in Saratoga let us catch some breath before the next big drive.

Skyline drive was fun, and then the truly technical bit came. Alpine drive was the trickest part of the day with a narrow road, with a high hump in the center, tight turns and large redwoods waiting to make you pay if you make a mistake. The scenery was stunning under the trees, but I didn't see any of it, I was paying too much attention to the road... [grin]

When we reached the coast, the sky was grey but it was clear and not fogged in. It was beautiful in a strange way. Had to tell where in the distance the sea ended and the sky started. Very memorable.

After a too short drive up the coast, we turned inland and home, picking up Skyline drive for another spirited set of twists and turns before taking to the highways for home.

A great ride by all accounts.

I'll post pictures later in the week.

Sorry Phillip could not make it, ZONC Annual Brisbane Show has been on the calendar since January. Did not let out until 3:00 pm. Just now saw this thread been offline since June 18.

Sounds like you guys had fun and we would have been in for the ride except we had to check out the new venue for ZONC's once a year big car show. I am not one for car shows and would rather run than show-n-shine. Looked like a good 5 hour run not including traffic in the congested cities after looking at the map. Although I am totoally familiar with all the roads that run up and down the range of mountains that separate the valley and the coastal mountains. Would have made for a full day like the Feather River Run.

How many cars attended?

In for the photos.
