I think there are 3 clear main issues with the 400Z.

1. The color they revealed it in was just a down right bad choice. It hid what lines and curves it has and fails to pop in pictures. If you look at the videos of it driving in the sunlight you can see the lines better and it looks a little cleaner, but it definitely would look better in almost any other color.

2. The front bumper/grille is a joke of design when looking head on. The rectangle look doesn't work and will never work with a modern design. I think the overall size of it is okay. The issue is, it's literally just a rectangle. Take a look at other sports/super cars with huge grille like the new Q60 or new Audi R8. They have a massive grille but it works and looks aggressive because it's more of a hexagonal shape.

3. Trying to modernize the older retro look of past Zs just doesn't entirely work here, IMO. I think they tried too hard to literally copy and past some of the designs when they should've just redesigned the look and then incorporated subtle retro styling cues. I do like the headlights. I feel like the tail lights could've been executed better. When I look at that long black strip of paint between the taillights I almost imagine the Toyota Prius rear. Maybe changing that black rectangle to body color would look better. Also, giving the tail lights a more 3D, unique shape instead of the flat, blocky appearance it has now, would really help.

Overall, I think they could've been a bit more creative with certain elements without breaking the bank. The interior is perfectly fine for me. The side profile looks great. Just tweak the front grille/bumper and the rear a bit and I'll take one hands down.

This video explains exactly my thought process on why the front grille needs a redesign.

I like it. Not enough to get out of my '16 Nismo with all the go fast goodies. I'm laughing at some of these comments. The first person who puts on a decent bodykit, wheels, and exhaust will be the catalyst in changing minds especially if the aftermarket supports the car.

One way to improve it instantly, FOR ME, would be to have the roof and rear diffuser painted the body color. I HATE the C7 Vette with its stupid tall and wide black rear diffuser. Looks so much better when its body colored. And I just about don't like any car with the whole black roof thing. So here's to hoping the black roof thing will either go away or be optional. Black can be added with wrap. Paint color can't. As for the diffuser, as long as its a separate piece that can be removed, then body paint won't be an issue.

Tough critics here! Remember people it is still a prototype and can change from the final version! Just be thankful they are giving you a new "Z" and not scrapping the whole "Z" line all together given the current economic state that Nissan is in and the difficult sales of the "sports car" in general, I am surprised that Nissan is even going thru with plans for a new "Z"

AND they kept the manual transmission! What more do you want?

Yep. I agree.

But IMO NOW is the time to speak up. I seriously doubt that front nose is 100% locked in. Especially if the rumors of 2023 have any merit (I certainly hope not). Swapping in a new front is the easiest cheapest thing they could change. So if people speak now about the major things, its possible they could get changed. If everyone just sits around singing kumbaya, nothing will happen.

I for one don't mind that its a refreshed 370, but just don't act like its not, Nissan folks. That reveal show was all a bunch of mush that tried to go around the truth.

I'm very happy the Z car is moving forward. I hope it helps Nissan keep going and grow. But considering the market, and how low the 370 sales were for the last 11-12 years, I'm just not sure this car is going to cut the mustard. Its certainly not C8 Vette excitement. Love it or hate it, that C8 is going to sell like hot cakes and steal potential Z buyers even at the much higher price.

What we also got official news from the reveal that they didn't even THINK about a new Z until 2017. Really? WTF is going on at Nissan? The 400Z should have been released in 2017, not just begun. Its a sad state of financial affairs and leadership there. Certainly not like 2003 when they were kicking arse.

Some color variations. Without a shadow of doubt it looks MUCH better in other colors.

I still think it needs a new grille design though.

Yep, better already in those front shots with different colors and roof body color paint. Fixes the mirror issue straight away.

Did you do these? If so, can you add body color paint to the roof and rear hatch? And as a "Bonzo bonus", the rear diffuser? If these aren't yours, perhaps someone else can.

But shut the f**k up about nit picky little things like reusing some interior pieces or other little things. It’s a prototype (albeit, they said it’s almost the final) and plus you’re brain dead if you think a company under the financial duress that Nissan has been could possibly design something new from the ground up. We’ve known for a while that it’s on the same chassis, old news.

Not to say nobody should dislike the car or state an opinion (everyone here is entitled to that) but we’re looking at a car known for affordable fun. If you want something completely new with every iteration, you better look in the exotic sector. You ain’t finding that ANYWHERE in the 40k range.

I don’t love everything about it, but still, let’s see what production looks like along with price, specs, etc. before we pass final judgement. Plus, we get to keep a manual for those of us that are passionate about that. Supra and Vette fans have lost that forever and I think that says something about nissans intent to please its Z fan base :)

Agreed!!!!:icon18:

My only comment here is that yep, times are tough at Nissan. So while I'm fine with the 370 refresh (and welcome the new engine and other performance things for sure), please don't say we "obviously" (not your words but implied) shouldn't still look for complete redos. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the 240 to 280 was a complete redo. 280 to 300 was a complete redo. 300 to 350 was a complete redo. 350 to 370 was a complete redo. Yet now, we shouldn't at least have hoped for it?

Again, I understand what and why they are doing it. Makes complete sense. And we should just be happy there is a new car. But I would still actually applaud them if they would just come out and say it. Stand up, tell it like it is, and beat your chest about having a true manual tranny sports car while others don't.

yes, the different colors do make it look better, thou like most comments, the front grille just does not do it for me. Also the comments about a refresh 370Z, had me look at some of the photos, interior parts remind me of the 370z. Along with the quarter rear window.

I think for me, it will come down to seeing the car in person, I am also price sensitive, only because car values out there.

I would think of trading my 370z in for it, but would consider it as a DD, with Automatic. Getting up there in years, but that is what I say now. Thought I get an automatic mx-5 and got a stick... some habits are just are die..

Did anyone see this article? MotorTrend says it will go on sale SPRING 2021!

"When it goes on sale in the spring of 2021 as a 2022 model, the new Z will reignite the car's traditional rivalry with the Toyota Supra. While we're looking forward to simply laying eyes on the 2022 400Z, we really can't wait to pitch those Japanese sports-car icons against each other. After all, like this redesigned Z, such a rematch has been a long time coming."

It would look nicer in the dark. Just like at parties.....after a couple of shots of whiskey.
