Here is a piece of technology the new Z will have even though it wasn't mentioned. Automatic emergency braking. It will be mandatory on all new cars from 2022 in most countries including Canada following a United Nations resolution.

Also the Japanese models will be getting auto on headlights that can't be disabled. In Japan, from 2022, all cars have to be in the 'auto' mode for their headlights all the time.

Seems overall positive in here, but a few very SALTY posts, wow, way to kill a mood....

It is the best view.
Yep, not that great if you ask me. Looks like a kid designed the read out display.
Eh, not sure.
Yes, but kind of a no brainer.
Glad to see it for sure.
I like my 2012 Sports better.
Um, yep, because from the bottom of the front window to the back of the rear window is EXACTLY the same as the 370Z. So are the side windows. More proof to me they are working with 370Z parameters with the design of this car.

I doubt it.
It's not the mirrors themselves for me. Its the way the hood comes into the mirrors too high and then just stops, like it got cut off. Painting the mirrors, A-pillar and roof could fix this easy. I hope having the black floating roof is a paint option and not the only way it comes. It looks stupid on the new Toyota Camry and it doesn't look good here either.
They better as it seems nearly everyone here basically hates it. Even my wife hates it.
I love the ones on my 370Z. These new ones are almost a step backwards and are just too plain Jane. Not sure if it's the shape of the size, but they aren't doing it for me.

I can wait. There is NOTHING about this Z Proto that would even interest me in the slightest to switch cars. The 370Z is way Way WAY better looking.

Bottom Line
The reveal was pathetic. Those guys are friggin' dorks. Completely unprofessional. The questions they took were some of the dumbest questions I've ever heard. And the answers weren't much better. Overall a very painful experience.

The car is simply a reworked 370, and it shows. As people have said, it looks forced. Reminds me of when GM took the Pontiac Solstice (my wife's car) and designed it to the Saturn Sky. The Sky was totally forced and contrived in comparison. It had to bolt around what they already had underneath. Same goes here, and it shows.

The front grill shape is horrible, and the grill itself is hideous. It's a bunch of Nissan Cube window shapes all lumped together. Very juvenile.

I don't like the hood at all either. They tried to make the car look longer up front by flattening and extending it forward more before the drop. It has a similar appearance to what Mercedes did years back when they did the shark F1 sort of nose. But the Mercedes was much better.

WTF are those stupid "fake" slits at the front corners? No holes, no lights, no nothing. A completely useless design exercise. Reminds me of the rear wheel fake vents on the Camaro but worse.

I don't like the side Z badge on the back C-pillar because it's better where it is on the 370Z.

As I already said, I hate the way the hood line goes into the side mirrors.

The window and roof lines are 370Z all the way - no change.

The Katana Sword thing is such a childish gimmick. Just a way to "try" to distract people that the line is the exact same as on the 370Z.

The rear hips are okay, but I like the 370Z bulges better.

The back end is almost too smooth, to the point of being completely boring. The only thing to like is how fast it cuts off. A nice short tight rump.

Overall, no dice for me. There is no way I would swap this with my 370Z, even for better performance. I don't even think it's good looking enough to buy even if I didn't already have a Z.

The only thing I can say positive right now, is that this is a Proto, so some things could change (especially that fugly front). And, as we all know, cars almost always look better in real life than in pictures or videos. So, like the new Corvette C8, I will reserve final judgment until I get to see it, sit in it, and drive it.

Until then, just more evidence why Nissan is sinking in quick sand. They lack real deal decisive direction.

Tough critics here! Remember people it is still a prototype and can change from the final version! Just be thankful they are giving you a new "Z" and not scrapping the whole "Z" line all together given the current economic state that Nissan is in and the difficult sales of the "sports car" in general, I am surprised that Nissan is even going thru with plans for a new "Z"
AND they kept the manual transmission! What more do you want?

I haven't been here since 2014 when I sold my 370 for a 335i, but I absolutely love the new design. Can't wait to have this new Z parked next to my E92 in a few years

Good to be back :)

All the old forum members are starting to show up, feels like home here! Overall I think they did a great job with the design, just hope they revisit the front bumper. Curious to see what sort of power this will make on the stock tune. Hopefully it sounds decent too!

Whether you love it or hate it, at least it’s there and they’re trying. We all hate the grille, that’s 99% of people’s reaction. But shut the f**k up about nit picky little things like reusing some interior pieces or other little things. It’s a prototype (albeit, they said it’s almost the final) and plus you’re brain dead if you think a company under the financial duress that Nissan has been could possibly design something new from the ground up. We’ve known for a while that it’s on the same chassis, old news.

Not to say nobody should dislike the car or state an opinion (everyone here is entitled to that) but we’re looking at a car known for affordable fun. If you want something completely new with every iteration, you better look in the exotic sector. You ain’t finding that ANYWHERE in the 40k range.

I don’t love everything about it, but still, let’s see what production looks like along with price, specs, etc. before we pass final judgement. Plus, we get to keep a manual for those of us that are passionate about that. Supra and Vette fans have lost that forever and I think that says something about nissans intent to please its Z fan base :)

Yessir, been out of my Z since 2017 when she was totaled but I always check in occasionally and the last few months been on almost every day again in anticipation! This might be the first car I ever preorder and the amazing community will be great to be a part of again!

Maybe it's just from being on BMW forums for 5+ years and having to see the new G22 & G80-G82 grill on the front page for however long, but I find the new Z grill pretty refreshing :icon17:

tvfreakazoid 09-16-2020 04:18 PM

The reveal of the people they used wasnt great lol. Better mc would of been better. Maybe had adam as the mc.
They should of taken more questions from the people. Oh well.

I'll be in my bunk!

Better than the new m3/m4 grill imo

decent looking car.

I'll save the rest until I see one in person.

I think a lot of you would poo poo on anything they did. Nissan is a company in financial trouble and the fact they didn't just kill off the Z all together is honestly the biggest surprise to me. Let's see how it performs. I'm not a big tech guy and honestly, I'll shy away from cars that have too much tech in them.

jcasti07 09-16-2020 04:49 PM

I have to say it's pretty disappointing to see some of the negative comments after the reveal. We all knew it was gonna take quite a bit from the Z34, so I have no clue what some people are surprised about. And then to go on an on about how the old headlights tail lamps are better... didnt we want something new? Idk maybe some folks are just trying to convince themselves that they're best off keeping their 370z, and for your situation, maybe that's best, but I'm just stoked that Nissan kept the Z alive in the first place. They threw in the tech that everybody's been crying for, they kept the manual alive, and they're giving us a boosted 3.0 for a start. I thought it looked beautiful on it's own and I'm taking that front end with a grain of salt knowing that they still have bits of tweaking left. I dont know. I guess with as long as this thread has been around I thought we would have all been grateful at the very least that they didnt kill it off

I love the Z. Hope the production model looks just like what they showed. Of course, it won't come with a carbon front lip, side sills, and rear diffuser. Doubt it would come with those GT-R brakes either (perhaps as options). A totally new, from the ground up redesign with a new chassis costs over a billion dollars these days. I understand the budget for this refresh was around $240 million. As low as 370Z sales are, it's a miracle that Nissan is going to do this car. I love what they have done considering the constraints they are under. I LOVE this car and look forward to seeing it with my current 370Z! There will be plenty of aftermarket options for a replacement front bumper if Nissan doesn't change it and you don't like it- I understand they already have suppliers going ahead with making parts for the car and the front end probably is set in stone now. I think it looks good anyway- I like the stark and clean design.
