sounds like your a/c control module's resistor is shot. can you hear the compressor turning on and off in defrost mode? if so, it might be as simple as just

if so, it might be as simple as just replacing the control module. |

took it to the dealer today. turns out it is a temp sensor just under the steering wheel in the dash that was not connected.
i took it to the same dealership a few weeks ago to get the steering lock replaced, and looks like they failed to reconnect the sensor when putting the dash back together. so all fixed now at no charge.
