Steering wheel lock recall..Dallas area

I went to the dealership today to get my oil change and the service advisor alerted me that there was a recall on my Z. It was for the steering wheel lock issue. I have read on here that Nissan has finally released a recall on it but I didn't know when it was going to start.

I'm posting it here on the Texas section to let the guys here in Dallas know that the Nissan dealership on the northwest corner of DNT and 635 have 13 of these part left. The recall is for the 370z, altima, and gt-r.

I have an '09 and have not experienced the problem but I went ahead and got it replaced anyway.

Owner Notification aka Recall steering lock

Received a pleasant surprize in the mail today from Nissan Canada.

Owner Notificataion/ Service Campaign due to manufacturing irregularity.

WHAT NISSAN WILL DO

Your Nissan dealer will replace the Electic Steering Column Lock (ESCL) free of charge for parts and labour.

Lol was goin to be the first thing I was going to do when I took it out of storage, now Nissan can do it.

LostSol 03-22-2013 08:40 PM

There's already a few other threads on this, and they're replacing with a unit that's still prone to failure, so I'd still pull the fuse after they replace it if I were you.

Is there no recall in the US?

There is. It's for 2009-2010 with Rev A or Rev B ESCL (I believe). They replace it with a Rev D, which have also been reported to fail (not as high of a failure rate as A or B). I have a 2011 with Rev D that does not fall under the recall, but I pulled the fuse months ago. The fact that mid-2011, Nissan removed the ESCL completely leads me to believe they realized the Rev D wasn't the solution. Since they are replacing the part with another part prone to failure, this recall is half-a$$ed imo :shakes head:

Glad you got it done. Sounds like you went to Bankston.

I usually go to courtesy but Bankston is a little closer to me so I may go there.

What kind of oil did you get? Just mobil 5-30?

But its funny even I've had Nissans for so many years , I never been to Bankston for service.

I always get the Nissan Ester Oil 5W-30 with each change. Really good stuff and it is the recommended Oil type for the Z.

Yeah, I go there for my service. I have one of their service plans that last until 80k miles and I get whatever full synthetic oil that they're supposed to use according to my service contract. I go there because I don't have to pay for anything and I have a friend who works there as a mechanic.

I have not tried Courtesy Nissan even though they are closer to my house. I went there in '09 when I was in the market for a Z but my experience wasn't positive with one of the sales manager. So, I won't even try their service department. They're probably good but I just don't want to risk ruining my day. :)

Steering lock recall

I just got a notice from Nissan that they are correcting the steering lock problem and that I am to bring my car in for a new steering lock mechanism. Dont know if someone has already posted this but I know its been a problem and so I thought i would let everyone know in case they have not heard so far..

I have already removed the fuse././what are your thoughts on this? Should i just leave things as they are or should I have this done?

Hey Charlie... I ha en't seen you on here in forever. How you been?

As far as your car. To avoid any hassle. Just put the fuse back in and take it in.

I have been away for a while..not for any special reason....nice to have a welcome back..

Got a new computer.. still am amazed at how often people complement my car nearly every single week...

DEpointfive0 03-26-2013 10:42 AM

Go get it fixed, then pull the fuse!
Besides that, we've known about this for a couple weeks now. But thanks!

Good to hear things are well. I have to say, I been consistently getting compliments on this car since I bought it. It's a great looking car.

Why would i want to do this? I am thinking "just leave it alone"? If it aint broke then why fix it?

Because Nissan, being the lazy motherfückers they are, need to pay for their laziness

Just set up recall for steering lock

Going in Thursday for steering lock recall . Didn't recieve anything in the mail . Bought car used . So I called and they checked vin number and my car is up for the new steering lock . So if you bought your z used I am not sure if you will get a notice .

3.7 ZPA 03-29-2013 08:10 PM

I had it done yesterday, and did not receive a notice. No issues whatsoever.

MX52Z 03-29-2013 08:29 PM

Somehow, they're pretty good at keeping track. I got my '09 from Carmax in December and got a letter from Nissan three weeks ago about the lock.

roclive75 03-30-2013 06:23 AM

:icon18:Bought my 2009 used in September got my letter last week and got mine done yesterday

Chuy 03-30-2013 10:23 AM

I has an 09 also, used third owner. I took her in cause of the rear hatch and they replaced my steering lock with out saying anything to my dealership.

geddy lee 03-30-2013 02:14 PM

Just pull the fuse . The steering lock is useless anyway. If a thief gets pass the alarm and/or uses a flatbed its gone .

Bucketlist2012 03-30-2013 02:41 PM

I just got my Recall in the mail..I bought it used and they tracked ME down...

Mandingo 03-30-2013 04:57 PM

I'm leery of taking my cars to the dealership for anything because they tend to screw something else up or at least give it a new bruise. I'm just going to leave the fuse out for now.

glennremaley 03-31-2013 05:53 AM

How long did it take at the dealer to have new steering lock installed ? Are the rear hatch springs a recall also ?

I removed the fuse from my lock and now I am wondering if I should bother bringing it in for the new lock.. Why should I bother??

geddy lee 03-31-2013 03:09 PM

RiCharlie, you should not bother. It will just be more time you can't drive your Z because its at the dealer. I pulled the fuse a year ago on my 2009, no issues.

Maivz 03-31-2013 03:29 PM

I had my steering lock unit replaced yesterday. Just dropped the car off at the dealership for about 2 hours that I wasn't going to use it anyway and got the call saying it was ready.

40th370z 03-31-2013 04:35 PM

I called my sevice department to ask them to order in the part, they said it as there waiting for me to have it installed.

They know I park it for the winter, and were going to call me to let me know there was a recall.

I love my Nissan's service department, probably the main reason I've bought 3 brand new Nissan products.

If your hatch doesnt pop up all the way, use one had to pop and the same to open. Shouldn't have to use two hands to open hatch. Mine was replaced during lunch so an hour, I still have my fuse pulled and have to plans of putting the fuse back in.

UNKNOWN_370 04-01-2013 01:36 PM

Are 2011's getting the recall notice?

Chuy 04-01-2013 03:10 PM

09s and 10s as far I remember

Tick64 04-01-2013 05:17 PM

I have a 2011 (Jan 2011 build date). Nissan Canada told me that my VIN was not affected by the recall.

KERMIT 04-01-2013 05:22 PM

Steering lock recall letter!! Just got it!
