Loud ticking noise from engine

Hello, I literally just pulled out of my local Nissan and the engine immediately just starts making this loud ticking noise and at first it was only at low RPM up to 3000 but not idle. Now it's even louder and at every RPM including idle. Also, the car has lost a significant amount of power. No check engine lights, just loud ticks. 27,000 miles. I am due for an oil change though, but still. Help?

Also, if I take it to the dealership, while still under warranty, will they give me a rental car to use while they are investigating?

I do not believe it is an issue with lifters or rocker arms because that would change the sound of the exhaust, which the sound is exactly the same as normal.

Not to mention the oil temps are unnaturally high for an unknown reason. (after putting in 5 quarts)

Check your oil level ASAP

What did the dealer perform on your car?

Nothing, I just went to pick up a part. Could this problem go away with an addition of some oil?

Synack 02-24-2012 08:14 PM

Took 5 quarts of oil to put it back to normal levels....... WTF is that!? This is a brand new car!

Plus, here are videos of what it sounds like even AFTER adding 5 quarts of oil and 20 minutes later.

No oil? Well, there's your ticking sound. Let's hope you haven't done too much damage.

Fill oil!

You've probably done some internal damage to that engine. It probably won't get any better.

Good luck. (And no, I'm not being sarcastic.)

sfearl1 02-24-2012 08:28 PM

how often do you check your oil?

Trips 02-24-2012 08:28 PM

Take it to the dealer to have it looked at

Sounds like a cylinders out or rod?

Not Good at all

6MT 02-24-2012 08:31 PM

Sounds like a knock.

Synack 02-24-2012 08:31 PM

Fuuuark. Thanks.... But seriously, never in my life have I seen a car literally eat up all of the oil. AND a NEW car.

Yeah, no kidding man. That's ridiculous. Engine wise I've treated this car with nothing but respect. How can it just eat that much oil?

You are going to need a new engine.

Gixxer-370Z 02-24-2012 08:38 PM

We have one of the best dealers here. Baker Nissan. Hopefully they can help. Do dealers provide rental cars in these cases??

Gixxer-370Z 02-24-2012 08:42 PM

Yes...if its warranty work I'm sure the guys will give you a loaner.

Waiz 02-24-2012 08:46 PM

Yeah that's not good if it took that much oil, something definitely went wrong.

They should provide you a loaner if not make sure and talk to the Service Manager or dealer GM.

Synack 02-24-2012 08:47 PM

Gah I just changed the oil not too long ago, this shouldn't have happened. Dropped in a new filter and 5.5 quarts of Mobil1 5W-30 just like always.

Ron 02-24-2012 08:49 PM

did u use the copper washer? If you did the oil change and they found out it leaked from the drain plug/oil filter then you're screwed.. I hope you can get it fixed!

Trips 02-24-2012 08:49 PM

Did noticed oil spots where you normally park? that would have been a clue that maybe their was a leak

If that was the case

Just used what we used before. Haven't seen any leaks of any sort where I park. The plastic thing is dry too.

^ Post above lol.

Ron 02-24-2012 08:52 PM

5qts to fill it up? you drove on empty man..

Gixxer-370Z 02-24-2012 08:53 PM

Gezzz....If its owner error they won't cover it under warranty. This is why BAKER does my oil changes and anything else I need. Everything is on them and they have all the records.

Yeah but oil changes aren't rocket science. This wasn't me....
It's simple. Drain > New Filter > Fill

Plus I don't have any mods that they can void a warranty or anything over. Just HPS tubes and a catback.

Did you do it yourself or did you have someone else do it?

I did it. I've almost always done my own oil for the past 8 years. NEVER had this happen before.

phelan 02-24-2012 09:05 PM

ooooh...hopefully it's something warranty-able, or you can get it fixed. if you needed 5 quarts of oil, your engine is gonna be very beat up. good luck...

Ron 02-24-2012 09:05 PM

Who has the car now?

Get it towed. Did you replace the crush washer?

Nope. Is this something I need to do before I go in? And where can I get it?

Nissan. Its the flat washer you should replace each oil change. Goes on with your drain plug.

There is no such thing as "carefully" driving a car with a broken motor.. get it towed, you will only give them reason not to cover it if you don't...

Synack 02-24-2012 09:33 PM

Having it towed is no problem :)

I just listened to your videos, that is not what I was expecting at all from your thread title, that sounds like detonation issues or even a fuel system issue.

Do not drive it like that or rev the engine at all, can you get a hold of a code reader before you take it in?
