Ah, now the strategy dawns on me. Buy one of those suction oil change pumps that extracts through the dipstick. Claim consumption, pull 1 qt every 500 miles while they do the test, get a free new block.

They put some sort of tamper proof seal on the dipstick so that you can't do that lol. U can always drain a little bit from the oil pan, not sure if they seal that too.

Gm uses a sealant on the drain plug/paints a witness mark on it. I suspect Nissan thought of it, too.

Labor nigh offset it. Also, a service department is not the best environment to rip the whole thing apart in. There is also the caveat that the dealership employees don't have the hands on that the original builders do, etc.

Further, if the bottom end was starved, who is to say there isn't damage to the top end? Just because the bottom end is what caused the noise doesn't mean the top end isn't damaged too.

I know engines and that is a rod knock. Engine rebuild or warranty replacement issue. That bottom end is shot.

Sound like you spun a rod bearing maybe two. Yes good thing you had it towed it could throw a rod through the block running it much more. Right now it's just chewing into the crankshaft.

Cool I hit it on the head! Maybe I have missed my calling as a mechanic. Although, I would only want to work on exotics. LOL!

Great deal they are getting it done. Post pics I wanna see.

None the less, they probably found no symptoms of failure in the head to denote a full long block. Heads (especially in this car) are expensive, not to mention the intake manifold and other goodies. They simply wont change that out unless they know they have to.

You can pound your fists all your want, but unless he can prove damage to the top end, he's not getting it.

Price difference on a short block vs. long block is probably much more than the few hundred bucks it'd cost to transfer heads and intake manifold over to the short block.

You're basing your argument off of "maybe"'s. MAYBE his top end has damage. MAYBE they decide to hand a head swap over to some inexperienced twit in the service department.

Or maybe, it'll just all go well.

And in this case, the shop is known to be high quality. They've worked on my car, and I'd trust them in general.

Yup. In fact, here's some footage of them doing an engine removal:
