Default Made a mistake!

I let my local dealer change their in my Z, big mistake. The service manager told me they only use Mobil 1 full synthetic in 0W20 weight. So I let him put it in, Z now running 20º hotter oil temps. Oil temp now running 220º instead of 195º with 5W30 Amsoil Signature Series. Going back to dealer and have them drop the oil and put in the 5W30.

This sh*t always happens with Nissan dealers. Since the recommended oil on all their more recent cars is 0W20, they think they can also use it on the Z and the GTR. It's simple laziness and complacency on their part. Nissan has never Ok'd using 0W20 on the Z.

My buddy recently went for an oil change at a Nissan dealer with his Z and they put in 0W20 without even asking him. He then phoned me up to ask me if this was ok. He was surprise when I told him the recommended oil is 5W30. He called the dealer and they were as surprised as he was once they verified the recommended oil in their service manual was indeed 5W30. But regardless, they told him that 0W20 was the only oil they carried and it "should" be fine. I'm not sure if he ever went back to have it changed. But, this goes to show how ignorant or careless most Nissan dealers are.

You're doing the right thing by going back and having them change it out to the right oil. Just make sure they actually do it. Demand to be present and that they show you the jug of 5W30.

Agreed, go in and physically watch them pour 5W30 in. If they don't carry it, tell them to go get some. They didn't follow the FSM and need to make it right.

I always bring my own oil in for oil changes. The dealers will put in garbage oil. I run Redline 5W40. It's a little more pricey but it is top notch. I live in Vegas where it is 110 degrees outside and Nissan VQ engines like 40 weight oil for more protection. It is an ester based synthetic. 20 weight is too thin, especially in the hot summer weather. No wonder your temps are higher.

I’d be lying if this thread isn’t concerning me. I was told about the whole Ow20 - is this something that will do a lot of damage if you run this ONE time or can you get away with one oil change having this. This was a little over a month ago - had a friend I trusted that a lot of places are running this as their synthetic and that since i don’t track it - it should be fine.

Only a VQ engine expert can tell us for sure whether using 0W20 one time could cause damage. But I can tell you that the engine was designed to use 5W30. The internal tolerances and the unique VVTL system take that into account. Dealers that say 0W20 should be fine are completely irresponsible because they have nothing from Nissan allowing it.

Chances are, your engine is probably ok as long as you didn’t track it or drive your car hard. But this whole «*OW20 should be fine*» dealer myth has to stop.
