Cars been sitting. Bad heater core and fuel problem?

When the heater core went bad in my Mustang 20 years ago, the air coming out of the vents smelled like antifreeze and when the engine was hot the air was almost steamy.
I talked to a buddy and he says it doesnt sound like an issue with the heater core since the heat and AC work as they should. Also, its defiantly water. its not coolant since it doesnt smell or dry like it and my coolant level hasnt changed.
