Do share what the fix is.
I may not be able to get the dealer to fix mine as my warranty has long expired. |

Good luck to all guys with your booking, hope it works out well for you all. Can't wait to find out the details. Please find out as much info as you about what they do, can parts be ordered in from Nissan to fix yourself etc. Thank you :) |
Got my car back. All the fix is is a different bungee. One with 100lb of pressure. It does work- new bungee makes it snap back with force. Downside, whatever they did screwed up the roof trim. I'll post photos.

See attached photos.
The trim on the roof is messed up on both the driver side and passenger side. Driver side - the rubber piece on the roof that presses on the body of the car to prevent any water from coming in is now being pushed out - probably due to the 100lb of pressure the new bungee is exerting.. Passenger side - the rubber piece on the roof that presses on the body of car is all wrinkled. Will probably let some water in if rains hard. Also at the top, the roof piece is protruding. Rear - noticed the rear is not pressing down as hard on the lid, there is now a gap. Some water may possibly get in….. |
here is a video of opening my roof with the new bungee. you'll also see how the rubber trim is sticking out.

Did the dealership who installed the new bungie cords not know what they were doing, or is this how the "fix" is supposed to be? If this is the only option we have, Ill pass and just put up with nudging the top forward as the lid opens rather than risk any leaks and the eye sore of a bad fit. Comon Nissan!!! :shakes head::shakes head: |
They told me mine was 1 of 2 first cars this was installed in. When I complained about the trim the tech told me the engineer was onsite and was helping him install. The engineer reviewed the results and told the tech that there is nothing else they can do. They blamed it on the fact that my car is 2014 and already 5 years old. And also since they put in new roof last year (and I've been waiting for the bungee fix since), I'm now out of parts warranty on the new roof. They said to call nissan consumer affairs if I'd like but there is nothing else the dealer can do. I called nissan, waiting on call back.
Also my concern is not just the bad fit and the trim. I can tell from looking at the top of the roof, that the bungee is squeezing the roof very hard, which I think is causing the trim to curl up and get pushed out. This makes me wonder if it will cause mechanics of the roof to fail after some time. |
Vman12.......I am really sorry this is happening to you and it seems like classic Nissan Dealer behavior (based on my many terrible experiences with them before selling my Z). I highly recommend that you lawyer up as you have well documented proof that this issue existed during the warranty period and all "fixes" by Nissan have not been effective and have even made the problem worse. The second a capable warranty/lemon law attorney reaches out to them they will push for a generous settlement very quickly, trust me.
Standard Nissan Protocol with Convertible Tops Step 1: Nissan Dealer jacks up customer's car and makes it even worse than initial problem. Step 2: Nissan Dealer denies all responsibility for something blatantly obvious. Step 3: Nissan Dealer says "there is nothing we can do" and directs customer to call Nissan Corporate Step 4: Nissan Corporate says "there is nothing we can do" and directs customer back to Dealership Step 5: See Step 3 hahahahahaha |

i called nissan consumer affairs. they said they called the dealer who told them the roof works fine, and it's just aesthetics, and since the car is 5 years old i just need to deal with it. Consumer affairs told me to get a second opinion from another dealer, which i did, and was told that yeah it doesn't look right, the bungees are putting more pressure on one side of the car then the other. But they're not experts since this is Ohio and they're only seeing 1 convertible a year and it's usually the murano convertible. They said they could try to take it apart to diagnose but they're not sure how long it would take them to figure out the issue/solution - could take months. Mentioned that it may be something that a roof specialist shop is best to look at. |

So i started looking at the roof rubber trim issue a little more to see if anything could be done. On each side of the car there is a small plastic clip that attaches the rubber trim to the roof. I think the uneven and very strong pressure from the new bungees is causing the clips to pop out and as a result the rubber trim ends up sticking out. i have attached a few photos.

This is such a shame Vman, sorry to here about your issues. Hope you can get it sorted but I don’t think l will look at this ‘fix’ anytime soon.
Met a guy today at a zday and he has just bought a new red roadster for$70k and his roof is hitting. He has had it looked at, they didn’t fix it and only managed to break something else. He said he is not too worried as he has warranty. Didn’t have the heart to tell that I think he is in for a world of hurt. Strange how new cars do it when the issue is meant to be caused by the cords being stretched over time. I will probably end up buying the original bungees and replace then at some stage as this appears to has helped some owners unless of course they can sort the clip issue out on this new fix |
Thanks Rodd.
Unfortunately for me both dealer and nissan consumer affairs said they won't do anything else for my roof as i've used up the extended warranty (because roof was so expensive) and the 1 year new roof parts warranty is done. So i'm SOL :( . Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk |
I've been thinking about trading it in for a porsche boxter (convertible). Wonder if those have any better quality. At least for now i have a new roof so shouldn't have any top material or hydraulic issues for a while.
Also the mechanic told me an interesting fact. Apparently after a while the roof seams start coming apart. Water gets into the seams (apparently there is electrical wiring behind one if the seems) and onto the wires. Water then rolls down the wires and into the roof control module / computer. This fries the computer which costs a few grand to replace the computer and wiring harness. Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk |
Update. I'm starting to notice the lid hitting the roof slightly, with the new bungee. Last two mornings kind of humid out about 65 degrees, lid hit the roof. So either the temperature/humidity or the number of times you use the roof is causing new bungee to start failing. It's only been two weeks with the new bungee.

Hmmm, now mine is starting to just barely rub the top when the rear hatch flips up.
Right at the back corner on the drivers side... :icon14: |
Spoiler did you get the new bungee fix or is that with the original bungee?

FYI, if you ever need the hydraulics for your convertible worked on or replaced there is a company called top hydraulics if you need it.

NismoUFO let me know how it looks. Make sure you check for all the issues i mentioned in the post.
This morning it was fine again. I think the humidity and air temperature will cause the bungees to behave differently based on the day. Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk |
Here is a video from 8/29/19 of the new bungee with lid still hitting roof. It was in the morning about 7am with 62 degrees Fahrenheit outside. Little chilly with some humidity.
I had the new bungee fix installed by dealer/Nissan engineer on 8/13/19. On 8/26 I noticed the first time the lid hit the roof as I was about to drive to work at 7am. It was about 65 degrees Fahrenheit outside and lots of humidity. The lid hit again on 8/27, worked fine on 8/28 and then again hit the roof on 8/29 as I recorded the video below. Also want to point out that on those days it worked fine in the afternoon/evening when the temperature was higher (80 or so). The dealership did tell me that these bungees are rated to work at temperatures as low as 40 degrees Fahrenheit, so not sure why they are failing at 62 degrees. This video was taken on 8/29/19, approximately two and a half weeks after new bungees were installed by dealer. https://youtu.be/kDD-V69RAhg |
i recently saw an article online where a 2017 nissan 370z roadster was reviewed. it's interesting that a brand new roadster would have an issue with the lid hitting the tonneau cover (roof).
https://www.motor1.com/reviews/10153...adster-review/ "This has got to be one of the slowest, clunkiest convertible tops I’ve used in some time. It’s alarming that this test car, with only 1,900 miles on the odometer, makes so many horrible noises during roof operation – at one point while retracting the roof, the soft top and body panel actually scraped against each other". |
I don't find it all that strange given it is a known defective part. When mine was being serviced I went out with the service manager to look at the brand new 370's sitting on the lot. 2 out of 3 had the same issue with tonneau cover contacting the rear of top and the cars were brand new.
Lawyer up, collect several thousand dollars (probably more, mine was a 2010), and don't let the dealer touch your car ever again. The best fix is to have a local convertible top specialist install new, higher quality bow straps and make all necessary adjustments. It is a very easy fix and does not cost much at all (I think I was quoted $300-$500 before selling the car). |
Same issue as you, vman. I’m having some health issues and do not have time to deal with Nissan right now. But, I think this is it for me and this car.

I'll go first to help out my SoCal peeps. The Prestige Companies have done several 370z/350z's and the owner Eric seemed like a true artist/craftsman. He immediately knew what problem I was having over the phone and stated that they have fixed several cars having this exact issue.

I have an appointment for my 2019 to fix the top issue the day after tomorrow. I'll keep you guys posted. In other related news, my check service engine light came on today. Only have 4,700 miles on her. That mid engine Vette is looking pretty good right about now.

I had check engine evap code come up last year took 3 trips to the dealer for them to figure out. They kept changing things and resetting ecu, but 2 days later it would come back. After third trip it was gone for good.
Here is something interesting. Few months ago took a coworker (he's overweight - maybe 350lbs) to lunch. Turned car on with him in it, fuel cap warning came on. I turned it off but it turned into check engine light p0457 evap code and wouldnt go away. After a week or so i just reset the ecu codes, it worked and never came back. I think there must be a hose or something, that the extra weight cause the car to press on or squeeze. But thats crazy if loading up your car will cause various systems to fail.... The quality just isn't there in nissan/infiniti. Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk |
Well, my car is still sitting at the dealership 4 days later. The bungee cord part needed for the top fix is backordered. They are ordering a new fuel sensor since they reset everything twice and the light came back on. Can't believe I'm having these troubles with a brand new car. I'll keep you guys posted.
|
Heading to dealership to pick up my car. The top is not fixed as they will have one of the necessary parts Monday, but the other part needed for the fix is on back order/ unavailable and they don't know when it will be available. Wish they would have checked into this before I drove my car to the dealership 30 minutes away and having it sit there for 5 days. Still don't know about it they fixed my fuel sensor. Sigh
|
Dramagodes, now is probably a good time to reach out to your friendly lemon law expert and get paid for your troubles.
I hate to say it but I am not surprised at all you are seeing this on a brand new car. As mentioned in my above post, 2 out of 3 brand spanking new 370z's had this "adjustment issue" last time I was at a Nissan lot. |

I just noticed a new issue with the new roof. Sometimes when closing passenger side door the window doesn't close inside the roof trim, but on the outside. As a result it leaves a huge gap where water/rain can easily get in. I kept opening and closing the door and same result, I had to press on the window when closing the door to make the window go under the trim.

I would love to own a roadster 370Z but it seems there are too many problems with the soft top.

Here is another issue that resulted from the new roof. I had new roof put in around october 2018 and didn't drive much due to winter, so just put the car in garage. After taking it out in the spring of 2019 (May) I noticed a squeaking noise coming from the passenger side window area. It only seems to happen when it rains and the roof gets wet. Once I hit summer, it’s been pretty dry so I almost forgot about this issue. Now that it's fall and it rains this issue is back. When I got the new bungees installed I asked the technician to look into squeaking but he said he didn’t hear anything (it was a raining that day). See video below.

Interesting on squeaky window on passenger side. I also sometimes get this, but I live in Dubai and it rarely rains here!
I find that if I very quickly touch window switch so it moves a fraction and no more noise disappears. I was going to try some silicon grease in the seal but wanted first to find out if that would degrade rubber. I have a leaky hydraulic cylinder and it is proving a right nightmare. Back in the UK I had a Lotus Elan M100 with mechanical hand operated roof - it was a lot less trouble. |
Well, I thought I would update. Picked up my car today. They installed the new bungees per TSB. So far so good. Storage lid is no longer hitting the top. All is good for now. I'll update if anything changes.

Picked up my car yesterday had the new bungees installed as per TSB.
works great, the mechanic took 20Hrs to complete but said the second one would take half as long. Nissan head office only pays 2.5 hrs to do the modification. Nice to have the car back. |
