The ribs of the horse buckle in from the blow, dislodging worms and ants from their activity.

The fetid stink of decaying meat wafts up with the blow, stings the man's nose. He pauses, catching his breath, then swings the bat down again and again. He's working up a sweat now, only just getting started.
