Default Buy Now?

I have a car (2006 GTi) coming off lease in March. I'm wondering if I would be better off buying a car now or waiting until Feb/March. I know the situation with the Sales tax tax deduction and that would make the last two payments on my lease a wash.

I'm figuring that the dealer would be more willing to deal on a 2009 now than a 2010 in Feb/March. My thought is to go in and offer them about $500 under invoice and take it from there. The car I would want is not in stock at the local dealer (Red 370, manual w Sport Pkg), but according to the Nissan website there is one about 85 miles away. My starting offer on the car would be abotu $30,800. Any thoughts on how this might go over?

How does the fact that the dealer would have to get a car from another dealer about 100 miles away figure into the bargaining process?

Thanks for any advice you may have to offer.

We always go lower on something in stock, but I'll be more than happy to work out a great deal for you on the car you want!

If you wait until Feb/March, there may not be much left to choose in 09's. If you want a 2010 you could always wait. Or just go by Koeppln and see what they can work out for you.

Your starting offer sounds good for a car in stock with the dealer you go to. You should be able to negotiate a little if the dealer has to dealer trade to get the color/options you want.

Definitely buy look at your options now, instead of waiting until Feb/March. But hey, you got 2 dealership guru's already saying the same thing, so I consider my post just something to up my post count!

The top two deals I've seen on this forum so far are $2400 below invoice and $1500 below invoice. I'm also at $500 below invoice with my local dealer and am not going to buy it at that rate knowing that people have achieved much better deals.

I got mine for about $1200 under invoice, I pulled the trigger, planned to wait til April and get an '10 but I figured why wait, I got a deal I can work with so I did it.

There are some great deals out there on 09s right now. For example, when I bought my car in November I had been looking at several different cars. One was a red Touring with Sport Package located at a dealer in PA. Red was not my first choice, but it was a good deal. The same car has been on ebay for about two months and every time the auction ends without it selling it gets relisted for less. It's now listed "buy it now" for approximately $3,000 under invoice. At that price I can't believe no one has snatched it up.

You'll always do better buying a car the dealer has in stock rather than one that the dealer has to get from another dealer. In addition the closer you get to the end of the year the better the price is going to be. Another factor is the location of the dealer. Dealers in colder climates don't want to keep a sports car all winter, especially if it's from the prior model year, since sports cars don't sell in colder climates during the winter. A good example is the car I referred to above. The downside to waiting is that the selection of 09s is going to decrease every day, week and month you wait to purchase one.

The less you are picky about the color and options the more likely you'll be to get a better deal as time goes on and the selection decreases. I was more picky about the color, trim and options so I didn't want to wait until I couldn't find what I wanted. I purchased my car in November from Lou Fusz from his existing inventory for a good price and got exactly what I wanted.

Thanks to all for the info. I'm starting to think that I set the bar a little too low using $500 under invoice as the starting point.....I'll probably go to about $1200 and work from there.
