Bad day on the I-8 Freeway...

13 Attachment(s)
Bad day on the I-8 freeway in SD. It was raining, my Z was oddly merging on its own onto the right lane wherein I was at the middle lane. On those few seconds, I noticed a black beemer I tried to avoid and from there, I lost control of the car when the VDC kicked in.

Insurance still has to see the vehicle. As far as damages goes, it does not look big on the photos, but are major if you saw it personally.

All of the damages are on the driver side; front and rear wheel, front and rear axle, side skirt, bumper, suspension and toe kit, seat belt which ripped out and the airbags did not deploy, and some loud hissing noise coming from the engine. Came out without a scratch, and still waiting what the insurance will say.

Sorry to see

Gotta feel bad. It will be repaired.

shadoquad 02-12-2012 08:44 PM

Sorry to see that, KarotZ, but I'm glad you're ok.

tibal 02-12-2012 08:50 PM

Ughhh. Im sorry to see that. Hopefully, as it looks, the damage is only cosmetic and can be easily fixed.

GaleForce 02-12-2012 09:03 PM

That sucks!

Good to know you came out of it without a scratch, the car can be fixed/replaced.

m4a1mustang 02-12-2012 09:06 PM

Sorry to see. :( Glad you're ok, though.

You say the car started to merge on its own... hydroplane?

amusez34 02-12-2012 09:30 PM

is that the real amuse kit or some knock off ones? it looks to me its a carbon fiber kit LOL

BlackZeda 02-12-2012 09:50 PM

Glad to hear you are alright. Ever since I spun out rain makes me a bit nervous when I have my summer wheels on.

It will be back to looking like new before you know it

370ZilverZ 02-12-2012 10:02 PM

Glad you are okay, sorry to see your Z isn't doing so well. All looks repairable though.

NeverBoneStck 02-12-2012 10:05 PM

That's nothing but a slight inconvenience .. It will be fine ....

karotZ 02-12-2012 10:17 PM

Thanks for the concern guys.

To answer some questions:
1) Yes, it is the UAM CF Amuse kit
2) Could be hydroplane, also I'm still rockin my stock tires at 25k
and I was in the process of having a set of RE-11 installed.
3) Mostly cosmetic damage, I'm just worried about the axle, toe kit, suspension and the loud hissing noise from the engine bay.

I'll keep everyone posted for updates. If the car needs replacement depending on my insurance's decision, the replacement most likely wont be a Z34 anymore.

What spooks me the most was I was going 55mph, and the bags didn't even bother deploying... :shakes head:

m4a1mustang 02-12-2012 10:18 PM

Stock tires at 25k... chances are you're way low on tread and hydroplaned. Can't really tell from the pics how much tread you still have.

Don't worry about that. I had a much more significant "front left corner" crash in my tC at 75+mph and the airbags didn't go off. It all has to do with the contact angle and the impact forces at different points.

karotZ 02-12-2012 10:27 PM

I pushed the thread limit too far since I was saving up for really good tires. Initially wanted the kooks, but test drove a friend's friend Z33 and I didn't like how it responded even on simple turning. Lesson learned, right? *sigh*

Trips 02-12-2012 10:46 PM

Wow very sorry to hear :(

But glad your OK

I was thinking Thank God!! it wasn't a front impact

For not having a front airbag? That wouldn't have been good. :(

The downsides of guys using aftermarket steering wheels I guess.

Again just a thought and glad you're OK :tiphat:

karotZ 02-12-2012 10:59 PM

I was expecting the side airbags at least to deploy, I literally slammed on the left median of the freeway. And I was so looking forward to this april's z-car west coast nationals! :shakes head:

Thechidz 02-12-2012 11:24 PM

really sucks especially considering it seems like such a fluke accident. 55 mph and start hydroplaning sucks bad

67ZNISMO 02-13-2012 02:47 AM

glad you're ok man! hopefully that kit can be repaired!

KingZee 02-13-2012 02:59 AM

Damn dude those pics made me cringe...good luck to you and the Z, glad you're ok, everything else is just material

bigsix 02-13-2012 08:44 AM

that's gotta be scary losing control at highway speeds...

haitech 02-13-2012 11:59 AM

Hopefully it can be restored to what it was before

nmjaxx9 02-13-2012 12:53 PM

Wow, sad to hear, and even more sad to hear if you are replacing it you arent going back to a 370.

That depends on many variables that don't always depend on speed. Great to see you are ok, it is never fun to go through this. :(

It doesn't look like the damage was severe enough to trigger the airbags. It's probably a good thing too. Having it deployed isn't exactly like resting your head on a pillow. I've seen people walk away with their face bruised up after it's deployed. It's meant to save your life, not prevent injury. It also looks like you skimmed of the barrier... in which case, the impact would have been a lot less (maybe equivalent to a 5-10mph impact)than a head on 55mph impact. If it were a 55mph impact, the driver seat and passanger seat would be occupying the same space. You don't know how lucky you are. Best of luck in getting her fixed.

amuzement 02-13-2012 04:02 PM

Lol you had a bad day? This morning a suicidal man jumped from the 805 to the 8. I work at Scripps Mercy and they were deciding whether to send him here or not..

tonythetiger 02-14-2012 02:34 PM

that sucks! at least ur safe man!

He survived that drop!?

OP: I'm sorry to hear that, but glad you're ok.

I found a bug (no word "drives"):

karotZ 02-17-2012 11:51 AM

UPDATE:

As expected, my insurance will not cover the aftermarket bumper but everything else is which is good. Total damages were estimated at $9400.
I'll keep this thread updated til' she's back to driveable condition.

vividracing 02-17-2012 01:11 PM

Wow that sucks man. If it gets in the shop now, I don't see any reason that the car can't be ready for Z Dayz.

karotZ 02-17-2012 02:16 PM

Hopefully it makes it. Anyhow, I'm in dire need of an CF Amuse front bumper. I haven't searched in the forum yet, anyone know selling a ready to go one right now?

takimbe 02-17-2012 02:29 PM

Oh man that makes me cringe! Glad youre safe though. I just had the amuse kit (with an S-tune spoiler) put on mine and id be devastated. Glad to see another amuse kit in San Diego though. Hope you get it back soon!

houkouonchi 02-25-2012 02:02 AM

Damn! I am amazed anyone could go 25k on those stock tires and was likely the cause.

I know most members here go about half that much before replacing them. I replaced mine at 18k and I do a lot of highway driving and they were pretty darn bald.

Rui Z 02-25-2012 02:15 AM

sorry to hear man. hope the repairs go smoothly.

Kenny 02-25-2012 06:29 AM

Was there any suspension damage?

If so, it'll never drive the same.

sfearl1 02-25-2012 08:16 AM

Change those tires guys! Sorry to hear about the accident OP. at least it isn't totaled, and looks easily repairable. Some scary stuff though.

This is what happened to me after I hydroplaned on the interstate. Spun a 360 and was hit by an eighteen wheeler...

tjlazer 02-25-2012 10:03 AM

^what tires and how many miles? Ouch

sfearl1 02-25-2012 10:06 AM

was on hankook v12's and they were in need of replacing. proof bald tires will get in you in trouble.

lol1234 03-01-2012 05:23 PM

Something about Z's and the rain. . . I made a very slow turn last year in my Z (i had a 350Z) and ended up fish tailing and smacking the curb. Light damage (curb rash and broken rear control arm) but still. The Z does not like rain.
