Default Z mileage test

I wanted to see what the car could max at. Made it to 461 miles and filled up to 17.8 gallons. The computers last read was 29 miles left and then it flat lined and just blinked. Not doing that again, might damage something. just for anyone who is interested.

I fill up at half a tank just to ward off fuel starve issues. byproduct of this is no worries about the gauge that says 50 miles left and goes to 0 in half a mile

Ok, with all jokes aside, just be careful, anything less than a quarter tank reduces the life your fuel pump. The gas lubes and cools your pump since it is electric. Then you could blow your flux capacitor causing ripples in space and time.

Also thanks for the info

So are you basically saying that at less than quart a tank the pumps are not fully submerged in gasoline?

I did it as well. Returning home, the range started coming saying 36 or so miles. I thought I would just make it to my usual gas station where I could also get car washed. It disappeared and some blinking occurred and I was very nervous that I will not make it. Pulled in and put in 17.7 or so in the tank. I had driven fast most of the last 100 miles, around 95 mph on average, ranging between 80 and 105 but when the range came on, I slowed down. I think I did about 450 miles.

JEEZUS, I really had no idea what you meant.

As for damaging something. What's there to damage? The fuel pump maybe if you keep running it dry. (And because I'm a nice, and I think knowledgeable forum member, I like to keep the spread of misinformation at a minimum...) BUT if you didn't fill 19 gallons you didn't get close to running it dry. I have gotten 500+ miles on a tank. And I have filled 19.1-19.2 gallons on many occasions without any issues.

Meh, just don't run it to bone dry over and over.

A gallon is more than enough to keep the pump cool and lubed (unless you make a hard long sweeping right and you get fuel starved)

I may be wrong, but I suspect that one of the reasons the car shows empty at 2 gal is because those two gallons are still there to cool the pump. That, and human stupidity, so the driver has some "reserve" when the tank shows empty. Myself, I have put in 18.something, once, and I never want to do it again. That's pushing it in my book.

Because Canada, I can't remember how much fuel I put in, nor did I check mileage with math (to many conversions). But the best mileage I have ever gotten in our Z was 27.2mpg on the computer during a road trip to QC. Mileage improved about 1-2mpg in Canada since they do use crap ethanol in their fuel. Simple math average fill ~17gal @ 27mpg = 459/tank. After fill ups our range was showing over 500 miles

It really depends, each car is different (fuel tank shape etc). The fuel pumps are pretty stout though. Pretty much what depoint said. All the people i worked with are picky people when it comes to cars. However they are automotive mechanics, some Master, or ASE certified. They always rag on people who keep their tank only a quarter tank full. But they are old school people. Cars are engineered with better knowledge than the older days
