Is that a Z? No it's a Porsche

Just a random thought I am throwing out there. When my wife first took the Z to work, someone asked her if it was a Porsche. I just laughed it off. Well we were just on vacation and a Porsche drove by and my wife (who knows about cars) says, "is that a Z?". Im like, NO WAY, THATS A PORSCHE.
Well, the girl in the passenger side of the Porsche was checking out my car as they passed, and I gotta feeling she said to her significant other; "is that a Porsche?"

I know a lot of us get upset when people ask, if our cars are a 350, or 370, or some other random car. How would you feel driving in a $100,000 or more Porsche and someone ask you if that was your Nissan.....
It just made me laugh thinking about it, and I am sure it happens

axmea? 10-26-2013 10:26 AM

If that was me all I'd say is they're ignorant and just don't know and then move on. Won't get my banana all twirled up.

Mt Tam I am 10-26-2013 10:32 AM

This is the common question. Very oddly I was asked that about my Jag E type by a young lady. She thought it complementary.

Masterbeatty 10-26-2013 10:56 AM

When ever i talk to cayman owner's 3 out of 5 always say i almost bought a 370z before this thing and i reply i almost got a cayman before i looked at the insurance difference between the two. I love porsche's but my pockets aren't that deep for the maintenance and insurance.

OldGuy 10-26-2013 11:05 AM

Take the Z and pocket the difference. Big differences in annual depreciation, costs of maintenance and repair, insurance, etc. all make the 370Z the hands down "better value" choice. No contest for most consumers. Of course, if you're a Porsche fan, well then it's a different story. Not for me, though.

ZeroZeta 10-26-2013 11:12 AM

I think its the wide rear that throws people off. Porsche has been doing it for so many years (older 911 Carreras etc) that people see the Z34 and immediately think Porsche) I know I always loved the wide hips of the old Porsches and that was a big part of the visual appeal of the Z for me.

Yeah I like birthing....errrr I mean wide hips too.

As to the OP's question. Nah no insult, like axmea? says, just ignorance.

Take off the hamburgers if you really want to confuzzle people!

got into a minor fender bender a year ago or so, and the guy is calling his wife as he gets out of his car saying "omg I just crashed into a porsche!"

Driftomodachi 10-26-2013 08:05 PM

My female friend said my z looked like a Porsche because it looked so "aggressive." I told her Nissans beat Porsches and I don't take it personally

alcheng 10-26-2013 08:33 PM

regardless they thought it's a Ferrari or Porsche or Prius...

I don't like it...

cos it's a Z...!!! IT'S A Fairlady Z

I buy it because it is a Fairlady Z...!!

LOL

I took my Z to a random shop couple days ago due to an emergency. They only had like beat up cars at the shop, like old hondas and trucks etc.
The mechanics were like " damnn that is a sick a*ss fuc*king car" etc

The owner, however, when doing the paper work said, "so that's a 350 right?" >.<
They can call it what ever they want, but I CANT STAND WHEN THEY THINK ITS A 350!

Same brand, next gen, but huge difference!!!

This girl thought it was an Infinity one time..LOL.

Or worse, this cop thought it was an FRS once..like how????

synolimit 10-27-2013 01:51 AM

Everyone thinks I drive a Porsche and asks.

What really pissed me off was I told a girl I bought a 370z. She said whats that? Another girl said its just like my car. She drives a ******* nissan 2dr Altima and I don't even think it was the v6.

That is why I hate the Altima commercial where the guy stretches out his 370Z. When in this universe did it become ok to think that the altima and the 370Z are one in the same.

Rusty 10-27-2013 05:56 PM

I had a guy in a GT3 do a double take, and then follow me for awhile checking me out. Pulled up next to me at a red light and gave me the

Jack, the head driving instructor at Pitt International drives a GT3. I parked next to him one time. Had lots of people comparing the two.

zeeder 10-28-2013 08:24 AM

When I had my 350 someone at a drive-thru asked me, "Is that one of those Altima Coupes"..lol.

TheGreatOne 10-28-2013 10:25 AM

I get the Porsche thing once in awhile, or just "What is that!!?"

The 350 thing is annoying sometimes but I think thats a testament to not seeing that many 370's around and Nissan being low key on the 370 release.

Funniest thing was at the gym outside I see some guy walking around my Z, checking it out. Did 2 walk arounds lol.

As I walk up he's like "Nice Z, I was cross shopping the Z but I decided to go with my Altima coupe, its a beast"

I'm thinking...sure you were cross shopping lol. Don't even think it was the V6 :(

I bet the only thing he compared between the two was the gas mileage :icon17:

My insurance is cheaper on the Cayman than the Z..................oil changes every 10k miles...........I dont know but my pockets arent that deep and the Porsche so far has proven to be the cheaper car to own. They also gave me a 4 year 60k warranty on it in relation to the 3 year 36k for the Z.

Oh and my wife knew the differance before we bought either of them. She laughs when people ask me if my Z is a Porsche but no one has mistaken the Porsche for a Z yet. Seriously doubt it will happen either.

I dont know how years young you are, but USAA gave me a quote for the cayman of almost $300 a month and the Z I pay w/ a 2nd car on there $180 a month with a perfect record and i am 27.

But i still get nice 350 or "what kind of porsche is that?" than nice 370...

10K mile oil change intervals. Really. This is surprising as much as cheaper operating cost.

Neat you have both to compare.

Tazicon 10-28-2013 05:05 PM

I have a Cayman S and 370z Sport. Insurance through progressive. They way I figure it is there must be too many kids driving Zs and cracking them up where as with Porsches it mostly older folks that drive them. When I go to club meetings I am about the youngest there and I am 49. I do not have a perfect driving record by any means.

Magic Bus 10-28-2013 05:40 PM

Tazicon, my insurance carrier has the Cayman S approx 35% higher, so I guess it's company dependent. On Oahu, the automotive repair shops dislike Progressive due to late payments and contesting repair costs. Hopefully in Vegas their much better. By the way at 49, you are a young man

Back on topic, yes I have had an elderly couple tell me "nice Porsche".

Justice97 10-28-2013 05:44 PM

One of my coworkers asked me today if it had a 4 banger in it. I was so offended, one of my buddies was like its ok...take a deep breath it's gonna be ok.
It was a good laugh!!

you sure he wasn't thinking your Z is the BR-Z... right?? :ugh2:

Riptide67 10-28-2013 06:32 PM

On the topic of insurance...I hated that mine jumped from $82/month in the 350 up to $142/month in the 370. 26 yr old, perfect driving record, and Mil discount through the Gecko.

My Z has also been mistaken for a P car...a victimless crime.

A few weeks back I had an older and retired Navy "O" compliment me on the Z. He knew exactly what it was and proceeded to tell me about his days of enjoying Z cars in Japan. I was late for work and had zero F's to give.
