can't patch a side wall....lol only if the thread gets a nail/screw/etc, it can be patched. they take a grinder to the inner part of the tire, glue on a

I would guess that the tire was on the right rear? One easy way to get a nail is going off on the shoulder to get around someone making a left turn. The nails all wind up there with the rest of the road debris.
