New Engine has arrived. Hopefully we can get started tomorrow. I will try and get some good pics of a Z with no engine!

theDreamer 08-14-2009 03:10 PM

Fuzz, with the engine out can you take some measurements of the bay for later reference, say people want to do something crazy we know the answer? :)

FuszNissan 08-14-2009 03:21 PM

I will try

My last car, an E320 CDI has an oil change interval of 15,000 miles.

How many quarts did it burn in 15,000 miles? Couldn't even tell - the dipstick was still in the middle of the range. It's a turbo too.

What separates a car that burns 1 quart every 2000 miles (mine just did - I had to refill it today) from a car that burns 0 quarts every 15,000 miles?

* Engineering design
* Manufacturing tolerances

Nothing else needs to be said. There is no arguing about it, like you stated. It's a fact that one or both of the above factors was not a priority with the Z. I love my car, but the fact that it burns 1 quart of oil every 2000 miles, and this appears to be common, says something pretty profound about the engine either from a design or manufacturing (or both) perspective.

shabarivas 08-14-2009 04:50 PM

an E320 CDI will never and can never be driven like a Z... its simple... its like saying... my ford focus never consumed oil - so its better designed than a Z

BanningZ 08-14-2009 05:09 PM

^+1 My GMC Cargo carrier burns oil and its rear wheel drive. Must have been designed by Nissan engineers. :icon17:

agreed, those things are fatty fat cakes, handles like an M1 Abrams, Mom drives one.

Did you guys ever stop to think maybe this is Nissan's plan to sell more of their ester oil?!

LOL - at my local dealership they very very very rarely ever sell the Ester Oil. Makes sense since all these guys who bought $40K cars can't afford to spend $10 on a liter of oil anyhow :stirthepot:

Sashimi 08-15-2009 06:37 AM

Man I thought I left Turbo cars, Rotary cars, and VTEC cars to avoid oil burning. Well at least I'm used to it by now lol

That was pretty quick!

FuszNissan 08-15-2009 10:54 AM

Usually takes 2 days.

Yeah, though I thought a crate-engine would take longer than that - I mean, supply lines I imagine from Japan would be pretty slim. Even then, it's being shipped by freight truck...

Actually you'd be surprised how easy it is to install a whole engine. There's not as much fighting things in tiny spaces to get around parts you don't want to remove, because you've pretty much disconnected/removed everything :) With the right tools (a lift and the right jacks and a hoist) it's a 1-day job even for amateurs on most cars.

FuszNissan 08-15-2009 02:42 PM

20 hour job

20 man-hours or 20 actual hours? Last two times I did it (but on totally different kinds of cars) we had 3 guys and got it done all in one day on a saturday.

aling lukring 09-13-2009 09:55 PM

aww your all scaring me.this is my first z car.now i have to check the oil everytime?im at 19xx miles now.do i have to fill it up.just to let u know,i dont even know how to do an oil change.i know how to change tires though

Ajboricua 09-13-2009 10:48 PM

How's the car?

703z 09-13-2009 11:43 PM

This is pretty disturbing. I've bought 3 brand new cars in the past 6 years and I've never had to worry about adding oil. I get the oil changed when its due and that's it. This isnt 1970. Cars shouldn't be burning a quart of oil every 1k miles. I shouldn't have to check and refill my oil every month, especially when its a car that costs over 35k.

the_student 09-14-2009 01:31 AM

There is a lot of information about this issue if you search the forum a little bit. Seek and you shall find. It really isn't something you should be too worried about, just keep an eye out for low oil levels. All in all it seems to only be an issue during break in time which makes sense.

tvfreakazoid 09-14-2009 01:51 AM

Dang with all these 370's burning oil like this, imagine in a few years from now, with a few years under it's belt you guys will be changing the oil every month. This is not good. Hopefully they will address this problem asap. At least my 2011 model.
It will take all of 370z owners to start complaining.

Funny that's the year I'm planning on buying my Z too :)! May 2011 be a good year for us students that'll be graduating!! I'm planning on buying the Nismo because buying the 370z base seems like buying a WRX, I want the full package the STi.

I've a question what would of happen to the warranty if you mod your 370 with Stillen G3, Full exhaust system and all the good stuff. Does your warranty void? I'm happy you decided to wait on modding your car because I assume an entire engine replace would been a hassle. I would like to know would if you have modded your car, what would occur if the engine did break down.

shumby 09-14-2009 05:32 AM

they would have to prove that the mod caused the engine damage. So full bolt on with a NA engine you will be safe no warrenty issues as lone as everything is installed correctly.

its actually more like comparing an STI with a spoiler to an STI without a spoiler.
