I had a set of Norton Sonic Ear Valves that worked great for me. Very little attenuation at normal sound levels but they close off when hit with an impulse.

I had a set of Norton Sonic Ear Valves that worked great for me. Very little attenuation at normal sound levels but they close off when hit with an impulse. They lasted about 10 years. On the range, you could leave them in for normal conversation but they would kick in when a shot was fired. Still needed muffs for full protection with big guns but seemed to work well when used alone with .22s.
I've been shooting air rifles indoors lately and haven't replaced the NSEVs. If anyone sees a deal on them (or equiv), let me know.
