Gota ask a stupid question
Why do I see so many people say the first thing they do is turn the VDC off. Don't beat me up, as the saying goes "there is no such thing as a stupid question."
Thanks Jim |
VDC is the traction control. If you are going to drive aggressively, basically it can kill your upshifts by cutting the power. Until you have an idea of how to push your car and what its limits are, just leave it on. If you know your car and tires and feel comfortable accelerating in a high HP rear wheel drive car and you understand the implications of that, then it can optionally be turned off to allow you to enjoy a little bit more zip.
|
Also don't forget that most of people here are drifter, and they love their car out of control sliding everywhere

And yeah, don't touch VDC unless you have some clearance and room to spare and no one to hit. |
I like drifting but I like not killing people more. I advocate for safety features on during daily driving and full off when you're on the track. Anything else is borderline irresponsible.
|
Just don't accelerate hard with the wheel turned and you'll be fine.

and its as Mr Garrison has always said "there are no stupid questions, just stupid people"(LOL JK your question is pretty legit) |
I "liked" one of the above threads.
the shortest version is: It can kill power. Leave it on when the road is wet/icy. |
Thanks for the clarification
the replys all make sense, I had always left it on and certainly will today in New Jersey with all this damn rain. Didn't realize that you could get a little more pop so will probably try this when it gets dry.
Liking this forum, don't know why I just found it...this is my 3rd Z, first was the last model year of the 300, second the last of the 350...makes me wonder what's in store for the 370 :icon17::icon17: Again, input much appreciated...Jim |

Glad you got your answer! Honestly, unless you are track God, drift king, or really just a damn good driver to the point you could hold one of the previous mentioned titles, leave VDC ON, it might cut power during gear shifts, but there is a bigger probability it will prevent you from crashing If you have a LOT of open space, try driving with it off. Just for shitz n giggles. I only turn it off when I have to make a really tight U-turn |

...I live my life a quarter mile at a time. :driving: |
I read where VDC only cuts in when it's needed to prevent the car from sliding out of control.
I also read where VDC controls the car by adjusting the power and breaking to each individual wheel..it that is the case then it's it doing something that cant be done by the driver no matter how good the driver is.. And being computer controlled its faster and more accurate than humans can ever be.. So if this is true it would seem foolish to ever turn it off.. |
I just enjoy pushing buttons :icon17:

Just to pile on some more, I do like VDC off. It lets me take low-speed turns as I want and does give a bit more power to the fun meter when going straight. The Z is my first RWD car.
But ... if it's wet at all, I leave VDC on. if I'm driving over 50mph, I turn VDC back on. if I'm driving at super slow speeds in heavy traffic, I'll just flip it on. if I feel like I may need to speed up suddenly in traffic for whatever reason and not in a straight line, I'll leave VDC on. Basically, I turn VDC off for times I want and am aware that I have more control, or I turn it back on when I'm just driving and not looking to be more spirited at the moment. |
Heeeeerrrrree We go again!!!!
Another VDC thread. :ugh2: VDC= Viciously Dumb Conversation. VDC paranoid vs VDC OFF purists,AGAIN. WooHoo!!! :ughdance: IBTL |
:icon18:
VDC OFF is for sissies. Real men pull the ABS fuse for complete removal of TCS nannies. |

I drive with VDC on for the most part. Mainly because I truly dont remember to turn it off as I dont have much of a reason to when driving M-F. Now weekends I like to get a little risky :rofl2:. However I do wish our VDC button would disable both the VDC as well as the ABS instead of having to pull the fuse. (even though it only takes a minute to do so, the convenience would be nice lol) I mean my 04' 325ci was able to do so though but you did have to hold the TCS button for like 10 seconds, then it would light up on the dash that both were off. it would slide like no tomorrow and with ease. TBH the power on the Z scares me a bit, after a few spin outs and fish tailing playing on the back roads I realized the power difference. so i havent been as daring with it yet as i would like..Real men get scared still right??:bowrofl:

you mean the yawn sensor. :icon17: i hate vdc. turn mine off.

I didn't even know my car had vdc or what it does or where to turn it on and off :icon17:

yah, while throttle off the car does do things on its own to correct yaw.
your G probably does that more than your Z. |
The only time I turn it off is when I need to launch hard from a standstill. That's when it's the most restrictive I find.
|
that and when taking a turn on bumpy roads

another reason why ive not messed with the suspension on my Z other than the front swaybar. :) |
Quote:
This has definitely kept me hesitant about suspension mods. Can anyone speak to the effect of suspension mods on VDC sensitivity? Does a simple lowering spring/camber kit mod really effect this that much? |

I have swift springs Michellin super sports which made the car handle pretty dam good! But i still have scary times on agressive turns do you guys think i need sway bars or is the lack of an LSD and proper brakes owning my turning experience?

VDC has definitely saved me in the wet stuff once or twice
I got a long drive to nj tonight so I'm going to have to breathe on the gas to get it moving lol |

Honestly, some of the replies in this thread (and the others that have discussed this same topic) are comical. "don't touch VDC unless you have some clearance and room to spare and no one to hit", "unless you are track God, drift king, ... leave VDC ON" - I mean really, some of the comments are just plain laughable. If you don't know how to handle a performance car, then yes, leave VDC on. If you do know how to handle a performance car, then it doesn't matter. Sheesh... |
