Jeremy couldn't deny it this time. He hated the 350. Funny how he pointed out the noise.....lol

Dav 07-27-2009 01:21 AM

Hahaha, Fartson really doesn't like our Z :D
As in the 350z test, if you remember, he said "too noisy... and it isn't a good noise...".
Not for defending the Z at all costs, but I think he's good at talking but less, less good at driving and judging a car.
I usually pay attention to what TIFF has got to say instead..

tbonesteak 07-27-2009 01:25 AM

yeah true. tiff is a MUCH more skilled driver and is a better, more analytical guy in terms of the car's engineering goes. Clarkson is just damn good at entertaining tho...

nicknick 07-27-2009 02:15 AM

Agreed Tiff Needall is much better at evaluating a car. JC is just entertaining and throws in a fair amout of subjective criticism too. Very biased I believe.

Forrest 07-27-2009 02:39 AM

VERY interesting episode. I wasn't sure if Jeremy would like the SRM but he loved it! As for engine noise, I wasn't surprised. He said the same about 350Z as well. Did anyone notice how Z4 took half the segment time and 370Z only got about 3 minutes worth? I guess that's expected since it's a Euro based show. Jeremy's last sentence is priceless :icon17: !

using direct TV, channel 264 = BBCA
no new topgear is playing on the 27th

bigaudiofanat 07-27-2009 07:35 AM

I love it it beat a bmw HAHA

awesomez 07-27-2009 07:53 AM

I expected more drilling from clarkson but not this time. He actually gave a couple of valid reasons why someone should pick z4. We all should face it, our new Z has some pathetic noises coming out of it compared to the old 350.

Ya don't think the noise in this car is harsh almost abnormal?

Which begs the question....Why is it so rough?

As far as your comments regarding Clarkson's qualifications, you apparently have no idea what your talking about, so therefore your comment has no merit. ;)

preformed quite well on the track, didnt over steer or under steer that much.

Brazilbro 07-27-2009 11:49 AM

Sound could be better with a better exaust from factory, ride isnt bad, but i guess if u compare it to a BMW maybe.. I'm surprised they didnt note how fast the Z was.. i mean it did better then cars 20K+ higher in price..

HATERS

shabarivas 07-27-2009 12:07 PM

LOL i noticed that haha... 1275 is VERY respectable on that track.. out did stock STi and Evo X...

Mercennarius 07-27-2009 02:08 PM

To be fair Top Gear dosnt favor Japanese cars much....almost always talks down on them when being compared to european competition. Regardless the Z still easily beat the Z4 around the track :).

Forrest 07-27-2009 05:04 PM

notice with the BMW they play elevator music and when the 370z comes out its playing bad *** techno music heheh.

wonder where i can get that song if it even is one.

SnakeBitten 07-27-2009 05:18 PM

I knew it would beat the Evo X just like the Revup Version beat the Evo 9. Very respectable time I must say but off the old Cayman S by a good margin. All in all excellent performance for the dollar period. This is the best Ive seen the 370z look. Really sweet looking especially in motion. That color didnt look bad considering it brown lol.

Mike 07-27-2009 06:03 PM

my wife has a Z4, and no, we don't do the wife swap thing! (unfortunately). It is a nice car though, and we will be doing a Euro delivery on one of the new ones this fall to coincide with oktoberfest. Nothing wrong with liking cars from everywhere!

vehl 07-27-2009 06:24 PM

the Z4 looks amazing! id trade if someone had a new Z4-35i.. those creamy testis would be so good. :D

..and the Z aint bad, heh, he got the road noise down alright..

zZSportZz 07-27-2009 06:29 PM

Yeah, no surprise there. Truth is that bmw doesn't really make track cars. I mean, no limited slip differential on any car other than M cars, not even as an option. And you can't upgrade easily and cheaply either with aftermarket. The diffs on 135i/335i, not.sure about the z4, have the ring gear welded to the differential mechanism, which means either swapping out the whole rear end, or massive cutting/welding/fabricating to fit the new lsd in. Not to mention generally smaller wheels and tires, relatively soft suspension, and ancient floating caliper brakes that are notorious for fading on the track.

On the other hand, if you want a road car, nothing matches the luxury, refinement, and pleasure of a BMW.

That's why I bought the z, cuz I plan to track it occasionally and the z is much more readily configured for the track. If it was strictly for road use only, I would have definitely gone with a 135i or 335i, or even z4,

Having read all the problems the 135i/335i cars have been having i'd stray away from owning one of those...especially after seeing my friends 3 series fall apart over the past year.

This makes me happy I did not go 135i, I saw it launch and fell in love, but that was before the Z came rushing up and passing it. I test drove the Z one afternoon during lunch and I almost walked out that day with it, just the wrong color.

I didn't say I'd own it. :D I would've leased it just for the duration of warranty. But yeah, reliability of german cars has just gone down the crapper. Heck, Mercedes ranks even below GM in reliability :S

ArtVandaleigh 07-27-2009 09:28 PM

Glad to see a great review from Top Gear!

nightfire 07-27-2009 09:37 PM

Well I wouldn't go as far as saying german cars have gone down the crapper, that's a little harsh. I mean BMW isn't made to be a track car and everyone knows that. If you want a great luxury car that turns on a dime and will give you trouble free years as long as you don't abuse it, then you get a BMW. My mom had an E46 330ci convertible and that thing rocked for the street, but I would never take it on the track. Now she has a 335i convertible and it's even more enjoyable to drive. Mercedes however, I can't say the same for. They're quality and reliability have been pretty bad for the last 10 years or so and they love to make innovative stuff that's way to pricey and loves to break. But look at porsche, they're one of the last (if not the last) non-supercar company that has an entire line up of cars that are built for the street and the track but is still made for every day luxury. I wouldn't count out those germans just yet...

RCZ 07-27-2009 10:18 PM

I was disappointed with the review. They just spent 14 minutes doing drifting in the rain and got no real results in the end. Then he downplayed it pretty badly and ended it abruptly when the Z killed the Z4 on the track. He had NO reason to pick the BMW this time around and frankly his reviews have been less than objective lately since he tries to make them so absurd to try and be funny. The humor is getting really repetitive too.

zZSportZz 07-27-2009 10:29 PM

Is it me...or was his pick of the BMW sarcastic? Even the crowd laughed. Sounds to me like he picked the 370z...just based on that comment.

He actualy picked the 370z, becuase he hated the 350z so much he coudlnt out right say i choose the 370z so he had to make it sarcastic.

Thats how i took it. Jeremy talks crap thats what he does. I like his crap talking even though he coudltn admit he wanted the 370z

Tell that to the owners of brand new 335i whose car stalls cuz their fuel pump fails. And based on what i read, the problem plauges not just 07 or 08 but even 09 model years. 3 years and bmw still can't make a fuel pump that works. Apparently even the redesigned upgrade are still prone to failure. Really inexcusable for such an expensive car. And it has nothing to do with abuse or track use either.

BMWs are good as lease cars, just for fun and showing off. But only a lunatic would really own one beyond the warranty expiration.

I test drove a 335i coupe with stick shift. It was lots of fun. I have to say the engine smoothness and quiteness, low end torque, and the smooth linear clutch and smooth transmisssion shifting were really pleasurable, quite a notch better than the Z. But the inability to cheaply tune them for track use and the horror stories I read about their reliability turned me to the Z.

*cough*cayenne*cough*

nightfire 07-27-2009 11:42 PM

I haven't read up too much about tuning the 335 but it can't see how it would be a nightmare to tune being already TT'd and a monster of a motor. But you did say for the TRACK, which it was never made for.

The cayenne yes I have to admit it's a quick SUV, but it's still a big ol' SUV. I don't really know what they were thinking when they made that besides trying to cash in on the US market for a novelty type of car. Not one of my favorites but then again there's never been a car manufacturer that hasn't made some poor model choices along the way.

And the fuel pump issue, hmm I have to research that. I haven't read up a lot about the comments people make toward the car besides initial testing from car magazines etc and my own driving experiences with the car. I do remember them saying something about the overheating issue due to the lack of an oil cooler (just like the Z), but I believe they fixed that for the new model year and retro fitted all previous years with the coolers.

And as far as leasing it and not owning it, I'm not too sure I agree with you on that one but to each his own. I've had experiences with a late model 840ci, two 7 series, and two 3 series and none of them gave us any trouble. And the cars were driven everyday with a decent amount of miles on them. Needless to say they weren't beaten on by any means so I'm sure there were a few problems I potentially avoided by not participating in aggressive street driving with any of them (except the new 335 i'll flog on every once in a while but no problems yet knock on wood).
