The answer was already given in the thread.
I have tried and confirmed this method.
For a fact, the car WILL NOT shut off if it is on and you walk away with the key.
A running car can be driven as far away as the person wants until the car is turned off. Once turned off, it will not restart until the key is present.
At no point will the car "shut itself" off unless it runs out of gas.
