Any automatic Z owners walk out their car in Drive or Reverse?

Given that our cars are push start on/off, I have the tendency to exit the car still in gear. Sometimes on an incline or decline  . It happens at least once a week. Happens to anyone else or is it just me?

KERMIT 03-26-2013 11:11 PM

I exit the car with it still in gear everyday... But I have 6mt

Mitco39 03-26-2013 11:13 PM

uhhhh.... what? Sounds like an accident waiting to happen.

nmjaxx9 03-26-2013 11:16 PM

theres a P gear for a reason. :icon17:

Why it has something to do with the push start button? Sound like you are born to drive 6MT cars. LOL.

wut

DEpointfive0 03-26-2013 11:31 PM

Really??? Or are you trolling us???
That NEVER happens to me. You need to go back to a Pry-is that engages park when you click the off button

I am dead serious, unfortunately. Come to think of it, happens when I'm in a rush and just turn the car off and walk out.

shaun66 03-26-2013 11:43 PM

I've done this once actually lol, just once...

Lol, ok, driving auto is so easy I just don't get how you can really screw up, lol

122554 03-26-2013 11:49 PM

Are you drunk, 16, or just plain stupid? Sorry to be so blunt, but it sounds like you're related to Lindsey Lohan. Perhaps you should have your license taken away together!

Haha, believe it or not your not the only one........ I valet cars and people will leave theirs in reverse thinking they put it in park, turn it off for some reason even though we're just going to drive it off seconds later, and there car starts rolling back, seen it many times.

To say it happens once a week is pretty crazy, I would get into the habit of using the E-brake before exiting the vehicle, peace of mind weather it's in park or not.

I've done the same thing, a few times. It definitely does have to do with the push to start/stop.

Going from the routine of Putting it in park, and then turning the keys to pushing the button messed up my routine a bit.

Man, a bunch of shitty replies in this thread.

Are you socially inept, 16, or were you never hugged as a child?

LMAO!!! Sorry, I was just trolling the thread because it's something I don't see happening especially because the 370Z makes a REALLY annoying sound when you don't put it in Park...
(And why would you make a thread to openly admit you f'd up?)

Hmm. Is your pseudonym secretly a clue to the reason for the problem? :rofl2:

I'm sure I've turned off a car in drive once or twice -- thankfully there's a neutral safety switch to prevent accidents when you get back in the car.

2xtreme1 03-27-2013 02:32 AM

Ummm I forgot to turn off the Z one day .
I had it on M mode on 1st gear. Had foot on break and e brake on then i jump out of my car but quickly notice that its moving forward . I jump in car hit brake and put it on park .
This count ?

Nailzs 03-27-2013 05:28 AM

Never happened, with ANY car I've owned with an automatic.
1. Arrive at destination.
2. With foot on brake STOP the car
3. Put car in park
4. Turn car OFF.
How hard can that be?.

And you can still lock the doors even when the vehicle is in gear? :hello:  A conventional key will not be removed from the ignition unless the vehicle is in either neutral or parked gear. I don't know, I drive manual. We have "intelligent key" for the dumb drivers, so I figure will have the same effect. When vehicle not in P or N, doors won't lock.

The1michael 03-27-2013 07:36 AM

Don't have that problem Op as I have a 6mt, but do this with my car probably once a day:

Im 24 and have ADD all my life (not this :eekdance: , but forgetful of small things) and I always place my fob in the cupholder. What I don't do, however, is take it out of the cup holder when I get out of the car after I turn it off lol. The funny thing is I always realize about one second after I close the door. Pretty much this :wtf2: reaction . I guess im just used to pulling the keys out of the ignition as this is my first push button car. Does anyone else do this constantly?

UNKNOWN_370 03-27-2013 07:40 AM

I could've sworn this car won't shut off unless the car is in park or neutral????????

:bs:

b15 03-27-2013 07:43 AM

I have a 6MT but I had my 08 Altima for 4.5years and never had an issue. Plus I think my Altima beeped at me if I shut it down in gear, does the auto Z do that?

Because I am secure I suppose. If you can't poke fun at your self on the Internet with a bunch of 370z enthusiast, you have some deep issues going on:rolleyes:

Haboob 03-27-2013 08:36 AM

I don't ever leave mine in gear unless I'm on a hill (which there are none here in Phoenix really).

The one time I had them in the cup holder, I did this, but my keys usually never, ever leave my pocket until I go to bed and empty my pockets.

Zythaxus 03-27-2013 11:06 AM

It does turn off when not in park, but it beeps at you, I have turned it off without
Switching to park because I was sitting there a moment before I turned it off but it won't turn on in gear it will just turn everything else on by button but not try to crank

Tazicon 03-27-2013 11:14 AM

I have an auto G37 and an auto 370Z, never EVER done this. I am very surprised to hear of anyone doing it. I just got off the phone with my wife to see if she has ever done this and the answer was no and then she said WTF are you asking this for (She DD's the Z)? I won't include the rest of what she said about anyone that may do that. She can be a mean woman when shes wants to be.

Man, you told your wife on them?! That's just not right... :shakes head:

enkei2k 03-27-2013 11:25 AM

So...you don't feel the car start to move as soon as you let off the brake or get up?

Oh I hate that feeling. Has happened a couple of times when I forgot about the e-brake in my last car. Such a mini-panic attack. :rofl2:

Then there are times I do set the e-brake, but for some reason I feel like I'm still moving when I get up and have to double check it.

dP3NGU1N 03-27-2013 12:08 PM

This is ridiculous. Unless this is your first car and you're not accustomed to the routine of putting the car in park there's no excuse for this lack of concern when you're driving a car. This is the type of thing that's going to cause an accident when the car gets away from you while you're not in it.

You can't seriously blame the push button. Sure ergonomic specialists should have put some kind of safety feature to keep the car on while in gear (unless the emergency shutdown procedure was activated). But in a regular turn key car you put the car in park BEFORE shutting the car off; your muscle memory shouldn't be affected by the push button until the point where you reach to turn the key and notice it's not there. If what you've been doing all along is try to turn the key to shut the car down, the key won't turn, THEN you realize you're still in gear then you've been bad all along and really shouldn't be on public roads with others.

Once or twice I could understand as a fluke occurence. **** happens. But if **** is happening to you all the time then you may need to reevaluate whether or not you're a danger to yourself and others.

nmjaxx9 03-27-2013 12:11 PM

Yeah I thought the first thing you learn from driving a car is put it in park before you turn it off. I can see leaving it in D, but in reverse? :inoutroflpuke:

Zythaxus 03-27-2013 01:01 PM

Most of what I've driven is autos, 1 time per car is reasonable but 1x a week, uncouth.

:iagree:

OP, your either new to the car or your trolling. Unless you drive a MT or a bicycle, you should never left it on the street in driving gears. There is no excuses of doing it weekly basis.

Plus there's the question of... Can this car be shut off in drive or reverse???

Sounds like trolling to me. I think the auto's have safe guards against it.

Correction. Just tried it but it lets off an alarm if you do so... the alarm should keep you from doing anything horrendously stupid like actually leaving the car.

I cant believe I'm actually discussing this.:ugh2:

ElVee 03-27-2013 02:39 PM

It's not a bad habit to just set your e-brake. Manual drivers usually have this habit, and it doesn't really hurt in an auto. (Unless you forget to disengage it, but that's your problem.) Thankfully I already do this in my current car, so not worried about it in the Z, despite the lack of a key to grab out.

Zythaxus 03-27-2013 03:43 PM

Can't believe I jumped in here either, but in the manual i believe it says it will activate the braking safety thing if your ebrake is on and you try to go over 5mph

kenchan 03-27-2013 04:02 PM

wat i tend to forget to do is set the wiper stalk back to off and i start the car, snow on wind sheild just pours inside while the door is open and im reaching in to grab my scraper.

well, that's on my dd...

Zenmaster 03-27-2013 06:25 PM

well, since i'm not a women, I don't drive automatic so I never leave it in drive or reverse

I'm joking

MR.nismo 03-27-2013 06:58 PM

I just realized one thing...well maybe two.
OP, OP OP OP :gtfo2: you either just started driving or...or....or...or...you have nothing better to do. We all now by now, you are the only one in a "social mental status who is not at the top level at all... not even close" who leaves the car engaged in gear and walks away from the vehicle. Good luck with that. I hope the car does not runs away from you.
It reminds me of one of my ex-wifes. She got out of my vehicle while in neutral and the parking brake was not engaged and in a sloped driveway. That's way she is another of my exe's.
