Since 2002? That's news to me. Cast pistons are gonna create issues when you take a factory lean turbo car and lean it out more. It's pretty straightforward. And when a large proportion of your buyers are joining the car, you're really going to see issues. |
Pistons are one thing, rings are another. The pistons have nothing to do with poor ring quality. And yes, since this platform has been in use, it has been a problem

The problem has only been common in the EJ257, mostly as a result of the hypereteutic pistons. If you think piston construction doesn't have anything to do with these failures, you should do some more research as to what a ringland is. Every STI I've seen that has run into ringland issues has had all the telltale signs of detonation prior to issues, with an owner too hard-headed to fix the root cause. |
Idk about you guys, but almost all chicks i come across dig my Z because its a Pearl White :D lol

I'm very familiar with the issue and what it stems from. I would not hesitate to buy one (I did), nor would I hesitate to recommend it to a friend (I hear shadoquad is enjoying his) |

The 2008+ EJ257 will blow the cylinder 4 ringland if you touch pretty much anything other than the catback without a tune. Most of the failures are from guys slapping an intake and exhaust on the car and running it untuned. 2004-2007 WRXs and 2005-2007 STIs blew the cylinder 4 ringland due to the fact that there's a nasty lean spot in the factory tune where the ECU switches from closed to open loop fueling. The EJ205 in the 2002-2003 WRX had no problems running untuned with an exhaust. Those motors blew up because the owners put a manual boost controller on it. The MBC would allow full boost at part throttle, with the expected results. If you get a good tune on a Subaru it will be fine. The problem are the owners not realizing how bad the OEM tune is, and changing parts without getting a good tune.

Well guys, I got the crazy out of me and I'm keeping my Z
I might pick up something cheap as a DD but I now refuse to sell my Z unless it was for a 911 turbo or LFA or something fun. |
