keeping the driver seat from wearing out.

How do you guys keep your driver seats from wearing out? I fear that if I get in/out of my car enough, the fabric on the left support on the driverseat will start to tear because my *** is rubbing it soo much when entering/exiting the car.

Any suggestions besides ugly car seats?

cdoxp800 10-28-2012 11:02 AM

don't drive the car? LOL

nmjaxx9 10-28-2012 02:12 PM

you can always get a seat cover, or the above statement works as well. :icon17:

w0rM 10-28-2012 03:00 PM

I actually hold my steering wheel when I get in and out of the car so I don't slide against the seat any more than I have to.

NickTurnon 10-28-2012 03:03 PM

Mines all worn down from getting in and out...

Ill probably pick up custom leather covers on Ebay for $200 or $250.

+1. No way I know of to completely prevent wear (other than seat covers and they can rub the seat if they don't fit well), but keeping the leather clean and conditioned will help a lot. If you can't find a DIY on this site, try your favorite web search engine. "leather cleaning" "leather care" "leather conditioning" &c

Don't wear rough and/or dirty pants. Keep all sharp objects out of your back pockets. Don't smoke (in the car) - from what I've read, smoke is very bad for leather.

You need to use the door sill as a push point to get out of the car. I assume you are putting your hand on the side (bolster) of the seat to get leverage to exit the vehicle. Instead of using the seat, put your hand on the door sill and use it as the push point to exit the vehicle. This method works for exiting the lowest vehicles.

DEpointfive0 10-28-2012 05:51 PM

I originally cared about the seat bolsters a lot, I would get in like a moron to prevent the leather from getting ruined... BUT I found a local (not anymore) upholsterer who installed the leather in my previos car who said that they change the bolsters out all the time on cars than they are the #1 thing they do...
They showed me examples of some of the cars they they were doing it to at the shop, and I could ONLY tell they had been replaced because they looked better that mine...
And they quoted me like $100-150 to replace the arse one and like $150-200 to do the backrest one... (This includes the rebuild up of foam and they said they could redo the whole seat in memory foam for no additional price) They also said they'd charge me less because I'm a return customer, and if I came in on a Tuesday when business was slow, they'd charge even less...
And for that price, I'll let my fat arse destroy the current ones, and if I ever NEED them replaced or if I ever sell the car, I'll have them replaced... Not worth the time and worry to keep putting leather crap on all the time

But leather conditioner DOES work if you're against replacing the bolsters... +1 for Lexol (brown bottle is the one you want for leather I think... but OP said he has cloth, sooooo... replacement, or find a shop to rebuild the bolster with foam)

PW370z 10-28-2012 11:10 PM

I say just get in and out and enjoy the car. I am not saying trash the seats, and don't give a **** about them - condition and take care of them. I agree with DEpointfive0 - if they get worn out, just get the bolster replaced by a reputable upholestery shop. I personally hate it when people use seat covers. Why did you bother getting the leather/alcantara seats, if you are just going to cover them up? To me that is pointless. It is like one of my friends who really wanted a 335i. He saved up his $$ for it, and after purchasing it, bought a beater car for DD. He barely ever used the 335i, b/c he didn't want to put miles on it, or anything to happen to it. Therefore, he was basically paying his car note to drive a beater. Just my opinion.

EDIT: just realized the OP has the cloth seats. You get my point though

Yeah, beat that biitch, you paid for it, might as well use it, and as Frost posted, you're gonna die anyways, LOL

Getting the cloth redone is REALLY easy, they'll most likely just rebuild the foam, and that fabric is cheap as hell, and the shops have 7984389384 kinds of fabric to match usually

Z_ealot 10-29-2012 09:24 PM

sorry to threadjack, but seeing as we're talking about the seat cloth i was wondering if anyone knows of a good cleaning product that does a good job of cleaning the cloth in our Z's. i've tried some armour all cleaner that i've had good luck with in the past, but there seems to be a couple of spots in my Z that have some ground in dust that doesnt seem to go away no matter how much i try with the armor all.

NickTurnon 10-29-2012 11:48 PM

I use a wet rag and most of the stains and discoloration come out with that!

wdkwang 10-30-2012 09:15 PM

It helps to use real conditioners like Leather Honey that are meant to soak in overnight instead of those sprays that are just treating the surface. Leather Honey really gets into the material and keeps it moist

So this leather honey cleaner works on the cloth base seats as well?

BrianMSmith 11-04-2012 09:33 AM

don't worry about it, you can always replace the seats later, make it like a new car.

JARblue 11-04-2012 09:47 AM

Have you tried using the rear hatch as your primary method of entry and exit?

Mike 11-04-2012 07:34 PM

manual cloth seats, I just always moved the seat all the way back before getting out when mine was a street car. I do the same thing with the power seats in my Mustang too.

homeryansta 12-15-2012 11:43 AM

looks like I'm getting the clazzio seat covers. http://www.the370z.com/exterior-inte...at-covers.html

How to keep your driver's seat from wearing

Note: this is for cloth seats only. The following procedure does not work on leather, as the coating will not bind to its smooth surface.

1. Thoroughly clean your seat with soap and water. Let dry completely.

2. Mix 1:1 JB Weld, the large package (it makes about 2 cups)

3. Using a tongue depressor or similar instrument, coat seat with the mixture to a depth of about 1/8". You do not need to coat the bolster on the right side, since it gets virtually no wear.

4. You may also want to coat the left-hand seat back. If you do this, lean the seat all the way back to prevent sags in the material.

5. Give the material at least 24 hours to fully set per directions.

Enjoy a seat that will not scuff, wear, or tear, and can be cleaned with a propane torch.

Got a beautiful set of Katzkins perforated black leather seats. Gorgeous and will outlast me! Even if they don't, I kept the Nissan cloth ones in a box.

Whats your point? Alot of us use the Z only as a pleasure vehicle. I Personally own 6 cars, but that doesn't mean I'm not enjoying my Z any less than someone else that uses theirs as a DD.

Lean your seat all the way back prior to entering the vehicle. Put your right foot into the car and then aim for your butt to land at the very front of the seat. Now bring your left foot into the vehicle. It is okay to hold the steering wheel the entire time unless you don't want to wear that out to. Now, gently squirm backwards taking special care not to slide or you will cause excessive wear on the seat. Once you are seated properly then lean the seat back to your normal driving position. Take extra care when putting on your seat belt as the sliding of the belt will cause micro-tears in the fabric. Use the opposite sequence when exiting the vehicle. :icon17:

Out of all the vehicles I have driven my Z is the only one that I have ever felt like a grandpa getting out of. Granted it's slightly lowered but I have to pull myself out and off the ground using the door and steering wheel to not feel like I am destroying the bolster. Granted I am a driver and don't mind putting miles on all my vehicles (500 a week) and everything is replaceable.. except of course one thing- all of the fun times I would have never had if my toys just sat in the garage. The less I worry about the small stuff the more I have enjoyed the experience.

Thanks, I work out about 3-4 days a week. The calves are from running :)

SteveBad 02-19-2013 08:11 PM

Keep your keys in a shirt pocket and your gun in your right waistband. Those are the items that really scuff and tear when they catch on the seat material.
