How are your hands positioned while driving?

Moving from a truck I find that holding one hand at 12 doesn't work as well when playing with the car. Its a bad habit I started mainly because it is comfortable. I have since tried to keep my left hand at the 9 position while I switch gears and get on it, however I find that it feels weird and is almost harder to grip, although I know this is the preferred way to hold the wheel.

Just curious how you guys drive the Z.

shadoquad 09-12-2012 03:43 PM

10 and 2, just 10 when shifting.

edub370 09-12-2012 03:46 PM

12:00, other hand on shifter when cruising or casually driving. 10 and 2 when cuttin curvies

9 and 3 gives the most feedback and control of the vehicle. Normally that's how I keep my hands unless it's a long ride, then I get lazy and rest one on either the shifter or the doorsill.

jcosta79 09-12-2012 03:48 PM

One hand on my cellphone to text, the other on my 44oz Double Gulp.

I steer with my knee and shift with my elbow.

Haboob 09-12-2012 03:51 PM

9 and 3 usually, sometimes just below each.

I occasionally switch to 12, but I have been trying to teach myself not to do that.

Mitco39 09-12-2012 03:54 PM

Do you guys not find that 9 is a little low when shifting? If I was to grab the wheel comfortably by left hand would be at 10, but at 10 you dont have the "spoke" of the steering wheel to grab onto and I can easily see my hand slipping on the wheel (just as I could at 12).

DEpointfive0 09-12-2012 03:57 PM

I drive ONLY handed... Left hand at the 9, elbow on the door

9 and 3 only when I know the airbags are going to deploy. This way I don't break my arms in the process.

Sometimes when I'm driving casually on the local streets, left hand is at 2 and right hand is on the shifter/holding girlfriends' hand at the same time. Apparently it's cool for them to learn how to shift with their left hands lol.

6MT 09-12-2012 04:34 PM

Hands-free, baby!!

ayrton88 09-12-2012 04:35 PM

9 and 3. That is what driving coaches recommend. I don't understand how spokes of the wheel get in the way of shifting. Don't have that problem...at least with a stick.

Cmike2780 09-12-2012 04:35 PM

left hand 12 o'clock and right hand on top of the girl's head.

left hand at around 7-8 (bump on the outer edge of the wheel), controlling the wheel with my pointer and thumb. Right hand, shifting, texting, banging.

Mt Tam I am 09-12-2012 04:43 PM

I once did whatever one handed: 12 6, 10. Rarely two hands. I was famous for driving with my knee while taking mild turns, which I learned from my dad. My father would be considered a bad influence today. Boy I miss him.

I made myself drive at 9 and 3 and now it is a habbit that is hard to break. If I do it is one hand at nine. The reason is to know where your wheels are pointing when you come off the track or road. Trying to guess in the moment can be fatal.

6MT 09-12-2012 04:45 PM

I drive with my knees when I blow my nose while driving :ugh2:

True story.

binary0x01 09-12-2012 05:46 PM

Left hand: 10 and 3
Right Hand: 9 and 2

EDIT: Middle: NO HANDS

This is why I like 10 and 3, good grip on the wheel not too high not too low, and shifting hand close enough to draw fast... :driving:

EndyKwon 09-12-2012 06:35 PM

I think I might be the odd one out: left 8 or 7, right 2. besides 9/3 for the curves.

ddot196 09-12-2012 06:36 PM

I was taught 9 and 3 by driving instructors in a special driving class. Also gives you the widest turning radius without letting your hands off the wheel. We we learning in automatic of course for aggressive driving. Serpentine, slalom, etc.

RoshDawg 09-12-2012 06:53 PM

always 9/3. Never keep my hand on the stick.

I do, even when I'm driving automatic :ugh2:

I guess I'm the odd man out here ... 9:30 and 2:29:30

I've watched you drive. The other hand is at 2:29:33.

Liar!

Drex 09-12-2012 11:08 PM

It seems like you are prepared for a hard right.

luigi90210 09-12-2012 11:33 PM

depends, usually 9 and 2 when i am driving on a canyon road and just 9 when shifting, but when im driving around town, im usually just at 9 and my other hand is on the shifter unless im turning, than i go back to 9 and 2

chops 09-12-2012 11:39 PM

probably the only one, but 7 and 5. im a lazy driver nowadays.

although, when im giving it hell, im at 9 and 4. dunno why...just feels more comfortable to me

Mt Tam I am 09-12-2012 11:39 PM

What hand positions allow the use of the paddle shifters?

TheGreatOne 09-12-2012 11:42 PM

In Traffic - Left Hand: 6 Right Hand: Shifter

Daily driving - Left Hand: 11 with elbow on door panel (making a dent) Right hand: shifter

TreeSemdyZee 09-13-2012 12:20 AM

9:30 and 2:30.

10 and 2 for sure

just experiment with it and find whats best for you, everyone drives differently from one another

axmea? 09-13-2012 02:26 AM

Left hand at 10, right hand at two. Wife's left hand on the other stick. There's a need for speed you know.

shadoquad 09-13-2012 07:29 AM

I paid more attention to this as I was driving last night.

For the most part, I'm 10-2, but my hands move all over the place. 9-3, 7:30-4:30...

I'm a mess lol

If she was doing it right, you wouldn't have to hold her head. Train her up cause safety first..
