Sad times for the Z :'(

So there i was on the pennyrile parkway in kentucky, driving my second 370z that i purchased earlier this year. Around 3700 miles when my steering wheel started shaking abruptly. I immediately hit the brakes and pulled over. Got out and saw my driver side rear tire nearly completely disintegrated off the rim. Hanging on by just a thread. On top of that i have a black tar/rubber ring going along the paint of the quarter panel an rear bumper going around the wheel well. Along with wanting to cry, i was quite furious over the fact that this happened to my baby woth just 3700 miles. Not doing anything crazy judt merely driving. How embarrassing it was to drive the remainding 40 miles home on a donut. Now i await to see what yokohama is going to do.

Note: mine is without the sports package. So it ha the factory stock yokohama tires.

Will add pic shortly

dmhenderson 07-17-2012 08:08 PM

Bummer. I'd talk to the dealership and see what they do. They may replace the entire wheel if your rim is bent. If not, I would talk to Nissan about it and see what they say.

Look on the bright side though, it could be worse. You could say.... have a nismo with 1750 miles on it and be broadsided by a deer, then be forced to drive a brown Cube for 3 weeks.

DCNISMO 07-17-2012 08:18 PM

My mother had a set of Yokohama tires fall apart on her Camry. They replaced them. Bad tires do happen

Johno 07-17-2012 08:46 PM

Yeah the dealer is being a pain right now. But im gonna assume the nismo part is from experience. Sorry to hear lol

Omg dm! :ughdance::ugh2: here too!?

That darn Cube is making us ALL miserable ;)

ChrisSlicks 07-17-2012 08:53 PM

I would be mad that the TPMS didn't alert you to the flat before it went catastrophic. Could have been a nasty accident if you had swerved while the tire was deflated.

:shakes head: that sux... Sorry :ugh2:

w0rM 07-17-2012 08:56 PM

Damn, that sucks. It sure seems like the warranty should cover something like this. New tires shouldn't just fall apart no matter what you're doing.

dmhenderson 07-17-2012 08:59 PM

I'm telling you, the 2012s are cursed o_O

dmhenderson 07-17-2012 09:05 PM

I'll stop whining by the end of this week. Headed to the beach and the dragondeerslayer will be ready to roll by the time I get back.

Ok-im starting a new thread...."who has a crashed-crunched-animal killing 2012?"

dmhenderson 07-17-2012 10:01 PM

Not just animals. So far iirc we have:
-1 deer kamikaze broadside crash
-1 raccoon front spoiler demolition
-1 inexplicable random tire blowout
-1 guy whose parked Z was hit by a dumb drunk teenager and totalled

There are probably more.

binary0x01 07-18-2012 12:43 AM

That's powerfully un-cool that is...

Now I am paranoid about my tires... great...

Johno 07-18-2012 02:40 AM

Whats crazy though is that the tire didnt go flat necessarily first. It just tore lol if that makes sense

Magic Bus 07-18-2012 02:41 AM

Johno, sorry to hear about that. Hopefully Nissan will make your whole car right, not just the tire. Please keep the Z community updated so we'll know how to proceed should someone else experience this.

Johno 07-18-2012 02:42 AM

Yeah and im having an issue with the dealership with them saying that my warranty papers have to specifically state that the tires are covered. Personally i dont see how they wouldnt be. Bu whatever im seeing what yokohama will do

Will do. Currently im going through the investigation process through yokohama. Right now i have to send the tire to them where they pay for shipping. If it is found to be a warrantable issue they will replace the tire and reimburse the value of the tire based on the usage. I was told that since my tire had such low miles they still pretty much had 100% tread so ill get reimbursed 100% value of the tire. Also they will repair all damage. If its found to be non warrantable... Basically theyll send the tire back and tell me im SOL. From there ill prob go through nissan itself.

Davey 07-18-2012 05:53 AM

I don't think you'll have any luck getting Nissan to cover the tire, it seems usually the tire manufacturer's warranty applies in that case.

Good luck with Yokahama, it does sound to me like a defective tire. I don't see how a tire can just explode like that unless you slammed it into a big pothole just before, which they would be able to tell, so if it just let go you should be fine!

Good luck!

delamination? That is most definitely a defect. That was the central cause of the Firestone scandal several years ago (aside from the fact that they were mounted to Ford Exploders)

Check your other 3 tires very carefully. If you see anything starting to separate then there is a much bigger problem.

Same with my mom's car. It did not go flat, they they de-laminated. Two went bad, and they checked the other two and they were going to go bad. Yokohama took all four tires back from her and replaced them. The tire shop had others come in with the same problems. So yes, get the others checked...if they are from the same lot and batch get them replaced too. Things like bad tires usually run in bunches, its rare to have just one go bad. This happened many years ago with bad Firestone tires, people died before they were forced to take action.

Keep the tire until it is settled. If this is the start of a recall or if you need to show the local TV reporter, who knows.

kenchan 07-18-2012 10:06 AM

so just to be clear, this is the 18" tires on the base, not the Advans on the Nismo, correct?

:iagree: most definitely check the other 3. take them off the car and inspect thoroughly.

I am wondering the same thing.............

To the OP:

On a side note, the Advans that come with the NISMO are pretty awesome for OEM tires. Very grippy and decent wear characteristics. Right now I am using Hankook V12s (because I am poor at the moment), but will be going with more Advan Sport or even A08 when the time comes. Good luck with your quest for warranty replacement!

kidkotic2001 07-18-2012 10:22 AM

Look on the bright side though, it could be worse. You could say.... have a nismo with 1750 miles on it and be broadsided by a deer, then be forced to drive a brown Cube for 3 weeks.[/QUOTE]

:iagree:
I have to agree with that, I saw your brown Cube pics on your post and it looks like Sh!t. Even the birds poop all over it.

kenchan 07-18-2012 10:25 AM

yah, but if it's delamination, then all you folks with the same tire is at risk.

1-I started a new thread for crashed 2012s but got shut down (another similar thread had already been started, although mine was going to capture all of dmhenderson's stats above and was related to ONLY 2012's, oh well. you win some, you lose some...)
2-Z34Driver got left off the list-he got hit almost head on trying to avoid another vehicle recently, he had a PW 2012 that was 3 months old...
3-Mayan curse?! I think you may be correct ...twilight zonish for sure...doo doo doo doo..."You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another …"

and poor johno...the latest of the mishaps to add to the list of crashed/damaged 2012s.

dmhenderson 07-18-2012 10:53 AM

I think a "2012 wrecks" thread might be funny/painful assuming there isn't one already.

kenchan 07-18-2012 10:58 AM

keep it on the tire topic as it can affect those with yok's.

yah, let's find out for sure if this was an isolate incident, or if the op has 3 other tires that are bad.

TypeOne 07-18-2012 01:43 PM

Dont feel bad... I know someone on this forum that had their Z for less than a week and smashed it into the side railing on a bridge and another car. Busted tire ain't nothing to stress over.

we're trying to find out if he has delimation... very interested in seeing wat the other 3 tires are like. if all of them have similar traits, you got potentially a big recall coming.

Johno 07-18-2012 07:54 PM

Just so everybody is fully tracking the situation ill give a brief update. Yokohama is going to have me ship my tire to them where they will then bring in an independent tire investigator to look at the tire and determine the reason for it failure. As far as the other three i have to bring them into a shop to have the tires inspected. I have a very busy schedule and will get to that on my next available day off. Ill be sure to keep everyone posted on the progress and will post detailed information on the timeline an actions taken during the whole process.

NuffZed 07-18-2012 11:55 PM

Take a through and complete video of the tire your shipping prior to doing so. Let Yokohama know you are doing this. Make certain it is shipped according to Yokohama's guidelines for doing so, ask them for clairification if they haven't given you specific manner of shipping.

Personally I think they should be sending a rep to pick it up.

Hope this works out well for you man
