I was impressed by his honesty, but that doesn't help me judge a car correctly, if he can't answer important questions.

Salesmen need to ba able to answer serious questions about price, availability, financing, etc. The buyer should know all the technically important answers before he or she even goes to look at a car. Asking a saleman about technical aspects of a car is akin to asking the the accountant of HR person at your office to help with your latest computer problem.
