I think it takes a lot more HP for a car to gives you that "pulling back" effect on your body. At least a car that have a turbo.
|
For reference, my Mazdaspeed3 had that effect of pushing the driver into their seat when it accelerates, but my 370z would still go right past my mazdaspeed3.

She sometimes gives me more than I ask of her especially from a rolling start to dip over into the next lane and get around:happydance: |
Im very happy with the Z, but there are still things on the base model that are suspect. oversteer/undesteer,weak brakes for this engine, clunky shifting, horrible sound system, horrible gas mileage, horrible visibility, oil gets hot as hell even with 2012 oil cooler.
On top of all that though, its still 3.7 business and a good driver can do damage. Im leasing the thing so i cant do what i want to it... |

Even though I might get flamed...perhaps it's time for Nissan to put a small V8 in the Z. . |
[QUOTE=Telephone;1853370]I am somewhat disappointed as well. While I do agree that the linear powerband masks some of the 370Z's quickness, I feel that the 370Z is gutless below 4K RPM. This makes the car frustrating to drive sometimes. Perhaps it's just a shortcoming of the 6spd manual...I've never driven the AUTO. The gas pedal/throttle delay also frustrates me. Sometimes this car is just not as fun as it looks.
I see that you just got your Z. I felt that way in the beginning disappointed in all after coming from a BMW. I was saying to myself I think I made the mistake. But wait... while I drive the car more often...mile after mile plus a modification of the intake and the exhaust. Wow this Z has transformed to a beast and still getting faster and faster as miles racks ups the odometer. Give it it some time and you will know her better. I will never look back... rather look forward in having his double T. someday or get his big brother with the G and The R . |
should of got a mustang

Perspective is key here. As a car guy we have several different ones in the family here, all with different power bands. The Z has better torque then the G35 sedan that was recently replaced by a 2.7L Cayman. Cayman feels relatively strong due to the fact the car weights 600 lbs less then our Z, but peters out a tad above 6500. The old beater is a modified 2.0T WRX. Below 2000 RPM, that is a gutless car...the Z feels like a small block chevy in comparison :) The Z is sneaky fast as others have said. Just took some getting used to. I feel the 0-5K band is the strong point on the car. - b |
Getting a tune like uprev will fix that throttle delay and change the car completely.
|
It's all about perspective. I've been a happy 370Z owner for years now, but my mind wonders about other cars after I read the car mags, watch YouTube videos, and go to track days with faster cars all around. It's easy to feel like the Z is chop liver as time moves along. So much so that I went and test drove an E92 M3 and a Cadillac CTS-V last weekend. At the end of the day, my perspective had changed once again. Both cars were great cars. The M3 was just one notch faster than the Z (read: slightly faster but not dramatically so) while the CTS-V pulled like a beast. But the steering feel of the M3 was good but not as connected as the Z (I know, I know, it can't be so). Also, the interior was lackluster and boring...nothing that makes you inspired and connected to the car. The CTS-V couldn't disguise its extra 1000 lbs and felt like a behemoth in corners and braking. Wrapping in the price of these cars being double the Z's, I drove home in my 370Z again assured that I had made the right purchase 3 years ago. I can enjoy my Z as a daily driver, track car, and autocross car and never feel bad about abusing a really expensive vehicle. The CTS-V and even M3 are less than optimal for autocross while the Z shines. The Z can hold its own in corners and braking zones at track days, only to be trumped on long straights. I definitely bought the right car.

Great testament. Thanks for the test driving. |

I've actually felt it too on occasion but I recently had it Uprev turned and I get torque everywhere now, which is great.
But I agree with everyone, with the linear curve, its deceptive... |
Did your tuner mess with the throttle map?
|
I agree with your perception of the M3, a great car but the interior is very outdated and the Z's steering was heavier and more "sporty" feeling, they really watered down the e92 in terms of feel in comparison to the e46 m3. I guess they were hoping that the purists would over look all the padding in exchange for the additional displacement and power.

This all seems familiar to me. I bought a 2009 Cobalt SS about the same time my brother got a 370Z. I drove it a couple times and was not impressed with the acceleration but I did feel it was faster than mine. We compared acceleration times and we were about even. Sometimes he can pull away from me, but I pretty much beat him out of the hole every time. Both cars are very responsive, my Cobalt feels a lot lighter, but I don't have nearly as much confidence in the twisties with the 370. Then again it isn't my car. The rwd is more fun though. At the end of the day I'm happy with my purchase, and he's happy with his. I'm especially happy because my bank account wouldn't handle a 370Z.
I think with a little more torque and maybe some better rubber than stock, it would be a lot more interesting to me. I'm sure I wouldn't be disappointed with some FI on it either. |
^^ I assume your Cobalt SS is turbo charged version?

He said 2009 so yea. |
Looks wise the 370z has the cobalt beat. Also, I don't know about you but I'm not a fan of torque steer. The Z is stock form is very restricted, a set of test pipes, catback, intake and a tune will really wake it up.
|
What's "fast"? I think if you're not impressed with the speed of the 370Z you won't be impressed with much of anything coming out of a showroom south of $50K. You sound like you're looking for that off-idle neck-snapping torque and you probably want an LS3 for that, even the Mustang GT/Boss 302 isn't gonna do it for you for long, they're not that much quicker from the butt-dyno perspective, it's another engine you need to get up into the higher RPM range to make power, just like the Z.
|
Actually not a bad run...
2009 Chevy Cobalt SS (2.0L Turbo) 0-60 mph 5.7 Quarter mile 13.8 BURNED!!! 2009 Nissan 370Z (Automatic) 0-60 mph 4.5 Quarter Mile 12.9 :owned: |

Where are these stats from? |

As for the butt-dyno, I've even lost that feeling in my SRT. You get used to it and forget it even happens. For me, I'm looking for something more mature. I still want something I can zip around through traffic if need be, but don't necessarily need that "pin you to the seat" feeling, as I don't have it anymore with a car that does it. Plus, I want to have fun in corners rather than taking off from a dig, etc. Corners are much more fun! :driving: |

Anyone one can throw a bunch of mods and make power. But it takes love of the car to balance it out and give it the exotic drive feel the Z has the potential to make. More mods don't make a better car, the right mods do. you're repped. |
I completely agree. Too many people look at the Z without understanding its character, it is not straight line first kind of car. The exhaust needs to go, its too restrictive to meet emissions after that coilovers and a tune to improve driveability and you have a car that will feel really really good.

I have never seen 4.5 for a Z. The best I have seen was 4.6 but usually it averages around 5 seconds. 12.9 has been achieved by like 2 or 3 people on this forum, the car really does low 13's stock. And the Cobalt is a 14 second car. I'm sure there are a few with the perfect conditions where able to dip into the 13's but 99.9% of them run 14's stock |

But I am looking to add a Corvette to the stable. I drove a Z06 this weekend and was surprised to find that it also lacks that punch in the lower back. That might surprise you, considering the car is making 505 hp and 475 ft-lbs of torque in a 7-liter v8. But that's the truth, the z06 is so well planted that the acceleration doesn't feel like you're gonna break your neck. I think that cars with higher center of gravity or softer suspensions may give that feel, or turbo'ed cars. I remember feeling like the new Mustang GT and the Mazdaspeed3 were cramming me back into their seats. It's fun. But I like the planted, tight feel of the 370z and the track-ready Vette. |

ADVICE: Save cash, get the corvette GS (Z06 suspension) and focus on breathing mods & weight reduction. It might not be on paper as fast as the 06, but it will give you them ummph you're looking for... You can thank me later. |

The 2007 Z06 is not supercharged. It is a 7-liter 427ci v8 producing 505 hp. It's NA. I'm not looking for extra oomph. I'm looking for speed, weight savings, and that delicious exhaust note :yum: |

I too want more at the track and need a dedicated car not an all around like the Z. A Corvette may be in my future as well. If I need to tow this track car then I need a truck and trailer. Suddenly it starts to lose all the fun. Having a race car that drives on the street is the only way this will become reality for me. As I write this a Ferarri 458 Spyder just past by. I hope shadoquad you find your stable mate. |

But the Internet is proof :stirthepot: the Z will do it ;) |
How are people measuring the 0-60 time? How do you assure the road is flat and speedo is accurate?
