The VIN number determines the model year. not the month of production. I believe it is the 10th character.

Month built vs year of car can vary all over the place depending on whether it is a new model, a refresh, or the continuation of an existing model.

See the "Vin Decoder" in the sticky above.

Your build month is on the white tag in the drivers door jamb...

Default Month and date for buile

Thanks for the response, however, lets say the car was built in DEC 08
or March 09 . The "year change " doesn't usually go accordingly to the calandar year. Model 2010 Mustangs are on the floor now. Does anyone know the date the switch from 08 370Z's to 09 370Z's.

Thanks again for the quick response. Now if my wife will let me have the car for a day.\!!!!

There was no 08 370Z. It was a new car for the 09 model year. Typically manufacturers release the new model year in September.

But that can vary. A Canadian guy got the response from Nissan that the 2010's will not be released until 11/13/09 which means the build dates will be September or October of this year. Some manufacturers release the next model year in June. For instance, my '08 Corvette, built the 2nd day of '08 production came off the line on 6/26/07. They had all the specs and ordering information available at the end of April.

It is MODEL year, not calendar year that determins the cars "year"

I find what Nissan is doing with the Z to be very strange. It doesn't seem like dealers are getting any more in. I know that the Nismo and roadster will be coming soon, probably as 2010 models. It is almost as if Nissan is going to let their current allocation of coupes hold them over until November. I'm sure the other Nissan models will release 2010 models in September.

Thanks folks, the reason I ask, My wife's new Z has 2009 paperwork, however the door plaque has 08 on it. It is a 370z, but what is it.

Thanks again for all the help. What a great car!!!1

It's an '09 early build. The last 4 digits of your VIN number is likely relatively low. They are assigned Vin numbers in sequence of build. Mine is # 6027 and was built in 2/09

Usually during or after June Most cars transfer to the next year. My 06 Spec was built 06/06.

If its a Datsun its an '08. If it says Nissan its an '09. JK of course.. Yup - there is no such thing as a 2008 Nissan 370Z. The 2009 is the first model year so while yours was build in '08 its still a 2009 Nissan 370Z. Every manufacture is different as to when the manufacture date and the model year ends up....

Oh and "Go Datsun"!

If it's a datsun then you have yourself a really cool 1986 concept car.
