Custom vented hood completed, Pics inside

Hi everyone! Well first off I just came back from Iraq an oh does it feel good to be home! :D
I've been driving the Z everyday and it always leaves a smile on my face LOL!
My first mod I plan to do is a custom hood vent, that is cutting a vent onto the stock hood. I did it with my S2000 before and it came out very well. It's more function>form really. After hearing all about the cooling issues I wanted to attack it from all angles. I have one of my friends out of LI who does them and let me say he is a master of his craft. I was thinking of going with the GTR style vents over the exhaust manifold. Are there any other styles you think would be beneficial? Any photoshopped ideas would be great! Thanks!

First off, welcome back and thank you for serving our country!

Second. Do it! I have been curious as to what it would look like myself, but too chicken to do it. :)

37Z 06-12-2009 11:44 AM

OEM hood with added vents

The OEM hood is made out of aluminum. Just curious, where are you cutting in the vent(s) (i.e center. on both sides). You will need to raise the front lip in order to extract the engine bay heat out the vent(s).

For us 370Z members, could you DIY this mod with the tools used, time spent, repaint. ;)
Pics would be a plus:pics:

RCZ 06-12-2009 11:56 AM

I like the idea. I would like to see it done. Im waiting for a Seibon or a varis or some kind of vented hood to get some air flowing through the engine bay. I thought Seibon was going to come out with some stuff? Anyone got any word on that?

Freeze 06-12-2009 01:54 PM

He's talking about these I believe. Very clean look if done properly. Not many ppl have the guts to do it though.

Thanks for the welcome! I plan to do a dual vent directly over the exhuast manifold, right where there is dip on the hood so we can get some negative pressure over the vents. As far as repaint goes that's not an issue since the technique he uses doesn't chip it the paint.

Zeto 06-12-2009 04:26 PM

Well I plan to use GTR style vents on the center of hood right above the exhaust manifold. As far as repaint goes it won't be neccesary due to the technique being used.

Welcome back and thank you for your services to our country :tiphat:.

I am heavily involved on S2Ki and I am very familiar with the work of your LI friend. I highly recommend it and I look forward to pictures :happydance:

Are you going to do the simple cut-out of the same NACA duct shape or do you plan on actually adding depth in order to channel the air?

I wish you luck and thanks for sharing.

DIY will definitely need to be done on this. I'd love to see the results and find out how difficult this is.

That's great that you know about S-factor! What a small world! :D
We plan to cut along the contours of the hood. We will try to add depth but then we would also have to manipulate the mesh which might be difficult. We are still in the planning stage since we only get one shot at this.

Zeto 06-25-2009 01:59 AM

This Sunday we plan to prep and cut the hood. We will be sure to have a DIY thread. Stay tuned!

Sweet. Hopefully this will help with heating issues with this car or from what i've been reading.

Zeto 07-12-2009 11:28 PM

Sorry for the delay guys but I had a busy weekend last weekend. The vented hood is done and let me say I'm happy with the results. Now how do I upload pics? :D

Tell me what you guys think good or bad. BTW it might be a placebo effect but on the drive home I did seem to have lower temps than usual. I'll have to collect more data to substantiate my claim.

Boost_lee 07-13-2009 01:29 AM

actually, I like!

subtle, well-placed, functional

well done :D

OutCast|Z 07-13-2009 01:41 AM

I like this... I WANT this.... +1

Bster 07-13-2009 02:48 AM

Hmm.... on the fence about the looks of this... The S2K's version is better though.

tbonesteak 07-13-2009 04:52 AM

Niceeee!!!!!

thispecialk 07-13-2009 06:09 AM

did u guys manage to take pictures i wanna see step by step

tvfreakazoid 07-13-2009 06:13 AM

Nice! I was curious, is the hood more for looks or is it functional?

SOLISIMO 07-13-2009 06:24 AM

Flows very well with the car, great job :)

CBRich 07-13-2009 08:04 AM

This actually does look really nice. Not sure if you posted a DIY but what kind of mesh did you use?

wstar 07-13-2009 09:11 AM

Looks nice. It looks a little inboard of the ideal, but it's close enough and you've got those ridges in the hood to work around (as well as the bracing on the underside), and any heat sucked out of the engine bay will ultimately help.

There's no way I would be able to do a clean job of this myself though, and no way I'm making a roadtrip to NJ for it :)

SiXK 07-13-2009 10:25 AM

heres a dumb question, but what happens with water? when it rains I always have these two little piles of water that move up the hood towards the windshield. seems like it would just dump down in there.

Looks good, just not my taste, but well done.

Zeto 07-13-2009 12:29 PM

Thanks for the comments guys! I will try to answer all your questions.

We did take lots of pics of the process and I will post them up later today with step by step instructions.

We designed more for function. The look is just a pleasant by product :) Once the car was heated up to normal operating temp you could actually see the heat rising from the hood. As far as how much of a drop I would have to measure the under hood temp. Keep in mind the heat only rises when the car is at slow speeds or at a stop. In simple terms, once you reach a certain speed the airflow over the hood essentially seals of the vents. I was stuck in traffic for 2 hours in NY on the way back home and bay temps never went above 210F. Again I need to collect hard data.

To be honest with you IDK but I will find out.

Yes the ridges presented a little bit of a problem. We designed it over the exhaust manifolds and have the outside edges flow with the ridges. As for the bracing, we cut straight through them so the engine bay is exposed. It wasn't hard but just required a little finesse.

There's no such thing as a dumb question :D Everything in the engine compartment is sealed. No exposed wires or anything that might be affected by the water. I had the same mesh in my S2000 and I never had any problems for the 2 years that I had it.

Endgame 07-13-2009 01:45 PM

I like it! Looks great!!

dad 07-13-2009 05:00 PM

Looks good, I hope it works.

GMZ 07-13-2009 05:27 PM

Damn that looks great, OEM look. Might get the balls to do this at some point. Def need a DIY on this!

RCZ 07-13-2009 05:34 PM

Hey that looks pretty good. Almost perfect in my mind. Could you do some better pictures for us please? From the other side of the hood if possible too.

AK370Z 07-13-2009 08:23 PM

AK approved. Looks good.

tvfreakazoid 07-13-2009 08:58 PM

That's good that you guys do it for function and not just for looks. By the way it does look cool.
I hate it when there are kits that are out there and they have all these vents and what not, but there is no function to them. To me that's just a waste.

I will def do more pics tommorrow. Sorry for not posting the DIY but I have to get with my guy so he can give me the actual step by step instruction. He's the master cutter, I'm just an observer :D

FricFrac 07-14-2009 01:23 AM

Nice - reminds me of the 280ZX hood

i like it alot
(now that i saw the pictures i'm gonna go back and read the replies :icon17: )

Zeto 07-14-2009 02:03 AM

Amazing Frifrac! I have never seen the vents on a 280ZX before. The designs have a striking resemblance! Keep in mind we came up with our design from scratch. I believe the only difference is the curvature of the vent. Ours is curved on the inside while the 280ZX is curved on the outside. Very interesting. +1 for you

Zeto 07-14-2009 02:15 AM

Could someone photoshop the vents on the opposite sides please? With the angled curves on the outside. I would like to see how they would look.

I just did a quickie and flipped the vents horizonally in PS

Just so you get an idea

Shunya 07-14-2009 08:03 AM

i believe it looks good either way

Zeto 07-14-2009 10:24 AM

Thanks for the P-shop boost lee. +1
