Nice - can you do PS with the 280ZX vents? Just curious - might be worth digging through the junk yard for....

Spikuh 07-15-2009 01:21 PM

Very nice looking. Looks great either way, but I think vents flipped out flows better with the shape of the headlights and the front grill.

Beautiful work nevertheless.

There are actually several different 280zx vents, those he pictured are the early ones, later models (81-83?) had a different style. And IIRC the turbos had different vents as well..

Heres a pic of the later version:

The 280z also had vents but only in the 77-78 years (the last two production years).

But looks good!

I never bothered with the 82-83/turbo vent pics as they are asymetrical. The '81 turbo had asymetrical vents but the '81 NA had vents like pictured above.

Only the '78 280Z had vents AFAIK the '77 didn't have vents - oh and good luck finding those....

This statement doesn't follow physics. Faster airflow over the vents would create a Venturi effect due to lower pressure above (outside) the vents and pull air from the engine bay out through the vents. This would improve engine cooling at higher speeds.

thispecialk 07-21-2009 12:17 AM

has anyone replicated those bumper vents that i seen on a white 370z?

We actually had this discussion over on the s2ki forums. Someone drew up an autocad design showing the airflow over the vents. Now I'm no expert but this was how it was explained to me. The airflow over the vents would be considered negative pressure. So unless you had some sort of scoop say ala STi or a dip on the hood itself, the vents wont be as efficient in dissipating heat at higher speeds. Again this was how it was explained to me. I hope you're right in this instance :D

FricFrac 09-07-2009 08:57 PM

Anyone still interested in doing hood scoops you can buy them new over here

Tell me what you guys think good or bad. BTW it might be a placebo effect but on the drive home I did seem to have lower temps than usual. I'll have to collect more data to substantiate my claim.

the second picture looks like a decal laying on the hood because of the glare...are there any closeups?

kdo2milger 09-07-2009 10:02 PM

i would like to have this in conjuncion with ram air cut outs in the bumper on both sides...

I'm thinking of getting this done eventually as well, already have the guy's contact info. Will be putting silver over the cut tho instead of black since I have a MB car

did you have to have the hood repainted or did you just blend in the areas around the vents?

kdo2milger 09-09-2009 10:45 AM

these vents plus 2 ram air holes in the bumper directly infront of the intakes = gravy :yum:

with a side effect of cooler temps and fresh air intake

so when you cut threw the aluminum hood, what did you use to cover the unpainted surfaces?

did i miss the DIY thread on this or is it still being put together?

i am really interested in doing something along the same lines as this...

JvKintheUSA 09-09-2009 01:38 PM

Love the idea of a vented hood and some vents in the front fascia. Cooler is better!

The vertical edges are bare metal but you can't really tell from the pics. Other members such as Gaiiden and Danny GT have seen it in person and can attest to my friends craftsmanship. As for the DIY yourself, I'm still working on it since it's a lot of minute details and lots of pics. I also haven't gotten around to work on it since I started school already :shakes head:

With all respect for all your efforts.
From a style standpoint. It looks a lil awkward. Something makes it not match with hood design
And the white car probably makes it worse looking.
I think u still need to tinker with design on a looks standpoint.
Function standpoint... it sounds great. Just get those numbers out on ya research. :)

FricFrac 02-09-2010 12:27 AM

MSA has some hood vents....

Nice! They look to be direct replacements for the old Z vents.

Yes I agree. I believe the angles I used could be swapped from side to side.

I apologize to all of you for the delay in getting the DIY. I've been trying to link up with him to no avail. I'll keep trying.

Waiz 06-29-2010 06:01 PM

Nice job.

Another idea would be to use the OEM GT-R hood vents:

650 Hood Panel, Hinge & Fitting :: Body(Front,Roof & Floor) :: Genuine Nissan Parts :: GTR Parts (R35) 2009-2010 :: Nissan Parts, NISMO and Nissan Accessories - Courtesyparts.com

Zeto 06-30-2010 03:36 PM

Ok I finally spoke with him and it turns out it was on the S2KI forum the whole time. Difference being is they just used preexisting holes on the hood whereas I just cut straight through the support bars. And yes it will be fine :D
Without further delay he is the DIY for the vented hood,

Chuck33079 07-20-2013 12:05 PM

Since those vents are in the high pressure area by the windshield, I'm not sure if its going to help as much as it would if the vents were closer to the front. Would love to see some temp data.

I just want some vents for when the cars parked. 2 hours after a drive in my garage my underwood temps can still burn. The hood needs a vent, anywhere!

Zeto, nice look! I do like them there instead of the front.

Chuck33079 07-20-2013 12:21 PM

Absolutely. My garage is still warm in the morning if I've been driving the car hard before I put it away. My entry level understanding of aero leads me to believe the best solution would be an extractor style vent over the gap between the overflow tank and front of the motor. That way you would get heat rising out at idle, and heat would be pulled out at speed.

LiquidCrewZ 07-21-2013 07:34 PM

Looks awesome and it's functional, if anyone was planning on supercharging, great way of dispersing some of the hot air. Worked great on my 03 cobra and similar style. In the winter, you could see the the hot air venting from the hood. The real question is how much did it cost you?

Wow. That's a lot of vents.

DIGItonium 07-23-2013 11:32 AM

Needs... whiskers.

Haha... man my car is still at the body shop. Hopefully I get it back tonight. Been over 3 weeks without the Z, and I'm going nuts.

Zeto 05-12-2014 12:08 AM

Sorry guys. Car has been sold for several years now.

I have HKS short ram intake and to get cool air to it I got the Stillen brake cooling kit and ran the hoses through the space where the old intake was routed and have them dumping the outside air in front of the filters
I would love to put vents like the ones you installed in my hood
I live it NJ would your friend be interested in doing it to my car?
for a reasonable price?
