i hate driving with things in my pocket for some reason. it's just not comfy for me. so it goes in the cup holder in the middle.

Well, they're bucketseat-esque... You'd be surprised, with a key that small, the inertia is so low and small it doesn't go anywhere.
Simple physics keep that key in place.

Although I do question what you'd do if someone was riding shotgun... tell them to hold it?

I've become accustomed to leaving my key fob in my pocket ... the guy at the dealership told me the slot for the key fob charges your key fob.
