Powercoating color question for Sport Package Rays
So for my 30th birthday present my gf decided to surprise me and powdercoat my wheels but I'm glad she ended up telling me the surprise before actually doing it because she didn't want to do it wrong.
I have a Magnetic Black 370z with Sport Package Rays wheels and I've always liked the look of the hyperblack wheels. But as a browsed at serveral websites, I noticed that some angles i dunno if it's due to the lighting, its super light. I like it dark but not having it look like Gloss Black - to me that just looks cheap as if someone spray painted the rims themselves. So what color should I get? Is there a code? Some pictures I find the 40th anniversary edition a little too light for me, esp during day time. The other question is what do I do with the center hub cap? There's an emblem either glued to it or something. Since that piece is not metal, I guess it needs to be painted? So has anyone with any luck doing this? Did you mask it or what? Paint or can it be powdercoated with the rims together? This would be ideal!!! http://www.cartype.com/pics/7664/ful...h_wheel_10.jpg But it does seem like it's the same as what the actual 40th Anniversary which was released in the US look like: http://images.gtcarlot.com/pictures/51120821.jpg This seems a little light for me during day time....so is this called hyperblack? Ideally, i would want my car to look a little bit more like what they do with... LF-A, GT-R, Italia, IS-F, or even the current RX-8. I think they're a little darker. Thank you in advance for helping out a buddy. |
The first pic looks better. Both pics seem to be completely different almost, but the lighting can make a difference. You can always ask for a dark charcoal finish on the rims, or just go plan black w/o the gloss.

40th Rims are no where near black... they are closer to the color of the car (maybe a little darker but not all that much). Don't flame me, I know they are not the same color as the car but they are closer to that than black.

This is what I want I wonder what the color code for this is...lol Gtr rims on a maxima

Just call a powder coater up and see if they have color swatches they you can take with you or a portfolio of colors that they can do.

what should i do with my center hub cap?

Hit up Mike The Powedercoater on this forum. He can probably help with your question(s). I had my sport rays powdercoated, 80pct gloss, 20pct matte black. I don't believe this is what you are looking for though from your comment. Just took those off and went with Matte Black TE-37SLs. Here is what the sport rays looked like.

Nice Z, ZCar!
and yes Scruffy, that 2nd picture is Hyper Black... I had them on my Z32. Lighting can make a huge difference, if you look at the 2nd picture of my Z32 (still shot) the front wheel almost looks like a different color lol. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...cture026-2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...cture011-3.jpg |
Cheers man, yea those are a little too much black for me. I think I'd like to have a slit hint of silver to it.

I'd go with 20% matte black, it's dark without the shine but not to dull. It should be equal to the black trim around the windows and the same as the wiper arms.
|
I'm going to say that the 40th anni wheels look a little darker, but like I said, the lighting can be deceiving.
|
yah, i think darker color wheels look good in matte. :) unless it's like a 3pc wheel then the spokes can be glossy or matte and look :yum:
|
anyone on the forums with a Gm Z with gray/40th color wheels? I wonder how that looks...
|
I just dropped off my wheels to Wheel Techniques and will have pictures back by Thursday. I did it a hint darker than Hyperblack. It'll be very close to what we see on the Lexus LF-A or GT-R.
|
cool, it'll look great
|
Get the paint code.

please post pic of wheels off and on the car with paint code pls
|
Nice....very nice

Yes, I will do. I should get the car back by this Thursday or Friday. I will try to post pictures of it in different lighting so others can see if it's something they want. As of right now, I told them to shoot for something like this:
http://gallery.carreview.com/data/ca...xus_LFA_33.JPG so even during day time it won't look too light like the OEM 40th Anniversary edition. http://www.carreviewmagazine.com/wp-.../370z40th3.jpg |
it's crazy how sometimes the lighting could make the OEM 40th anniversary edition look like this:
http://www.motorpix.com/pix/m3/992913-motorpix.jpg Are these even the same as the other picture I showed? My receipt just said "DMB, Recon Dark Base Hyper Silver....Dark Than Display" |
I really like the color of the OEM 40th wheels, anyone know the paint code for them?
|
those 40th wheels look a lot darker than normal in that light. I want mine darker though. can't wait to see how yours come out!!

Is there a forum preferred or highly recommended powdercoater in the socal area? Also, how long does the process take? Are you carless for a few days?

The 40th wheels have a lot of pearl in them I'd bet so they look very different depending on the light... the LFA wheels are def a few shades darker. Here are mine when they were freshly cleaned...

So be sure you're factoring that in your price. I think normally that process easily could cost $30+/wheel. I called up 5 places and only 1 shop in south bay area, Nor cal (which I previous took my motorcycle wheels to powdercoat) allowed me to drop off the car and will take care of all this in 3 business day turn around time. They're pretty quick. They'll repair, sandblast, powdercoat. Most places vary in time....so far my response for turn around time was 3-4 days, 1 week, or 10-12 days. It really depends I guess. But I also heard some places will say as fast as 1 day turn around. But don't kid yourself, most places don't have the bandwidth for that. Nice ride MattP725, is that Gunmetal body color or is it the 40th Anniversary Quartz? |

Oh yea? Sweet man. At the time, Ruff Racing was sponsoring SFZCC and I got those wheels real cheap. |

The thing I learned about Powdercoating Hyper-black...they said they would actually start off with Black and then the more silver you add the lighter it'd become.
So I'm gonna try to do one hint darker than the 40th Anniversary Color (which I recalled someone from a powdercoating shop called it Hyper Black) Hyper Silver is what the stock OEM Rays are called. I'll let you know how it goes. By the way, the note with "darker than display" was a G35 Rays rim I saw at Wheel Technique, I'll try to post it when I get a chance so you guys know how it looks under the sun and I'm going to be one shade darker than it. |
Yea Scruff, get some pics up with whatever you end up doing. I'm curious to see how it all comes together.
|
I know in my industry colors are often chosen by RAL number. This is I believe a standard in Europe. IF you get a swatch with an RAL number on it and choose that color it should come out the same so no suprises.
Just an idea. Here is a link: http://www.signalcontrol.com/product...olor_Chart.pdf |
I am also looking at doing some darker wheels that are a little bit lighter than black. Basically, if the wheels are solid/matte black they don't really reflect the light and show off the angles well. I want something that is going to look mostly black but also reflect light around and allow you to see the texture and angles of the Rays. Let us know how it turns out and post a bunch of pics!
I called a shop in my area and they charge $90/wheel for this, and they won't take the car, they only want the wheels. Seems expensive and way more of a hassle than I want to deal with. |
when i get it back it should look something like this...
Below is the 40th Anniversary Edition for Europe - Black Edition http://www.the370z.com/members/scruf...ck-edition.png http://www.the370z.com/members/scruf...ck-edition.png http://www.the370z.com/members/scruf...ck-edition.png http://www.the370z.com/members/scruf...ck-edition.png |
That last photo looks like what a black 2013 will look like.
