Well considering she's got a bachelors and masters in accounting... I'd say I absolutely do. Which makes me feel a bit emasculated when I remember that I don't even have a college degree. At least I get paid like I do  ... I certainly don't see any need to go back at this point in my career.

happytheman 06-07-2012 04:47 PM

Yup, I feel ya on that one Jar. No degree here either, but I make pretty good money thanks to years and years of experience. My wife has two degrees as well. :)

I'm with you. I drive on the 80mph one daily and some people just scare me.

It's definitely working out for me. I certainly wouldn't have the experience I have without dropping out of school to start working full time.

Speaking of experience... would you mind lending a bit of yours if its relevant to this issue? I've got a computer here at the office that is hard crashing every night. It works fine during the day, then overnight it crashes and has to be hard reset. The power settings are set to always on (no sleep, no hibernate, only monitor and HDs shut off). I have plugged it directly into the router with no other devices on the network and same crash overnight. When I unplug the network cable from the computer, however, no problems - the computer is running just fine in the morning. I think I've pretty much narrowed it down to the computer NIC, the wiring, or the router. I guess it could be a driver or other software problem, too, but the event viewer is simply useless (fatal error 10 seems to be pretty generic). Any thoughts?

Yah I was going to ask if you checked your event logs. Hmm, I wonder if the one night's unplug from the network was just a fluke? I'd try that again and if it happens again.

I'm more inclined to believe its something internal to the pc tho (unless something's being pushed to it like an update). Have you check add/remove programs for any new installations/updates? :)

Yea, I should have added that this started happening on the previous install of Win 7 Ultimate maybe a month ago. It actually hard locked twice in one day while in use, so he asked me to do a reformat and clean install, which I just did last week. Its actually been fine several times when unplugging the ethernet cable. I'm going to take it home this weekend and see if it crashes on a different network. :shrugs:

Hey, Steve jobs didn't finish college either, and he threw Sony to the ground. :icon17:
I have a degree somewhere not sure where it went. In my line of work degrees don't mean shitt cause it's all about getting things done and 99% of it comes from experience and reading people's minds.

You may have a hardware issue. Just a guess at this point. I still wonder tho, has anything been installed or updated on it? I bet a dollar that it's going to give you trouble over the weekend (especially if it's been crashing consistently)! :)

I think you're right in that it is a piece of hardware. My money is on the NIC at this point. There are some random driver things in the event logs but nothing critical and the research I've done on those particular errors don't really point to anything specific. The user is pretty computer savvy and cautious enough to ask about anything he's doing if isn't comfortable. Basically only windows updates have been installed since I did the reformat and reinstalled his necessary office software (MS Office and AutoCAD primarily). I kind of hope its the computer because it should be cheaper than replacing our network gear (although we're probably going to upgrade to a WatchGuard router here in the next few months anyway).

I've never seen a Nic bomb a machine. Usually motherboard, memory, CPU or hard drive. That's just my experience tho. It sucks trying to run that stuff down tho if you don't have spare hardware. :ugh2:

My machine at work is identical except I put an SSD primary in his machine and his video card is one model prior to mine, so that's why I said I hope it is the machine and not the network gear. Plus I can pick up anything we need for replacement at Fry's. I'd probably have to replace all of our old a$$ network gear via an online order to fix any networking problem, which considering the $$ we'd probably go ahead and rewire the building with Cat6 as well. But it just can't be a network problem because it's only this computer being affected...
