Next Gen Z will likely have smaller engine.

First time poster, long time browser. Interesting article on motortrend.com. States the next Z and it's engine will likely be smaller. Also the Silvia may be returning.

Thechidz 04-10-2012 09:49 PM

if it gets any smaller I won't fit :/

azn370z 04-10-2012 10:22 PM

I would really like something the size of the cayman. The cayman and 911 looks so much leaner and not as bloated as the z. I would also like a much smaller gtr.

My_third_Z 04-10-2012 10:22 PM

Boo. I really had my heart set on a 400Z.

LakeShow 04-10-2012 10:25 PM

We are all going to be dead by then anyways. 12/21/12, also Snooki's baby is due that day.:stirthepot:

Z34 Nismo becomes instant collectible as most powerful Z made in history of Z cars. Love it!

Z goes down market to fight BRZ.

mhcoss 04-10-2012 10:56 PM

Ugh. Make the car smaller/lighter but please don't downsize the engine!

sfearl1 04-10-2012 10:58 PM

boosted 3.0 :stirthepot:

Rui Z 04-10-2012 11:04 PM

Pleeeeeease revive the Silvia!

Rui Z 04-10-2012 11:04 PM

Now I'm rootin harder for the FRS BRz to succeed

brucelidat 04-10-2012 11:05 PM

smaller boosted engine would be great along with a lighter car. High 300 hp range and better mileage along with a lighter car would make me seriously consider trading in for it as long as its new iteration is as sexy as the current one.

Ackrite 04-10-2012 11:11 PM

That's interesting. I wonder if it's so that it can fit in the Datsun lineup. I have no doubts that if it's in the Toyota FT86/Subaru BRZ class, the new Z would dominate. Either way, I'm keeping my Nismo 370

vo2max99 04-11-2012 12:13 AM

Yeah a more refined / durable engine would be nice. One that doesn't overheat so easily and sound like crap in ^ RPMS.

Something more like the I-6 T / N55 but higher revving. Mercedes has a nice 306hp V6 as well. I'd gladly sacrifice 30 or so HP for more flexibility, durability and refinement.

Other than the engine, improving the suspension tuning for better feedback, ditching the seats for some closer to those like in the EVO X, and a few other relatively minor things would go a long way.

I think people would have no problem paying a bit more if they did this. It would defiantly receive better reviews.

Dont count on it. Likely going to be NA 4 cylinder. Clearly a sparrow ...not an Eagle

280z/300zx 04-11-2012 12:31 AM

I was wondering how long it would take to see this info on here. I read the same article over at Nasioc 3 days ago. LOL. I figured someone would have posted it before now.

mhcoss 04-11-2012 01:32 AM

I don't think they need to make the car any smaller. It is already a small car. What they should do is take a good look at the design and shave weight any way they can. They should also continue to refine their 3.7 engine. I really hope they don't go to a smaller engine, its not like the current engine is overly large or anything.

the 3.7 VHR is bordering on overly large.

Honestly I'd expect 2.5 to 3.0 maybe boosted if smaller(doubtful)

hopefully prices will go down tho

I really hope they do not nerf their engine like this they have achieved a great weight distribution with the 3.7 why fix it if its not broken? Owners get great reliable power from a NA engine and if you are inclined you can boost it for some serious results!

Pauly 04-11-2012 06:19 AM

im wondering if the Z may have peaked for what it is, the whole power to weight ratio thing? i suppose they could tweak this or that, but im biased because i am so satisfied with my 370. like one dude said, this could be the one to keep! of course, the last thing i want the next Z to be is inferior, as i am a huge nissan fan, and i want them to stay on top of the class!

'10Anamoly 04-11-2012 06:49 AM

Doesnt the Z34 still have a steel frame? Switching to an aluminum frame (ala Z06 vette) would be a huge weight savings.

cossie1600 04-11-2012 07:03 AM

and price tag...

When I first read this article this is the first thing I thought. Our cars resale value goes up lol.

juicypinkkk 04-11-2012 09:56 AM

TBH, I kinda like having a big V6 in an import, its.... unique haha

kenchan 04-11-2012 12:41 PM

yah, we need a silvia to compete with the brz/frs, etc.

Iceagetlc 04-11-2012 12:50 PM

My prediction: 3.0l- 3.5l Inline 6 ending the VQ lineup. 3050 lbs, 315hp- 295 ft/lbs of torque with an 8,000 RPM rev limiter. 0-60 in 4.9 and 1/4 mile in 13.1

I also see them bringing back the X suffix to differentiate the years of car. I.E. 350ZX

B&W_Evader 04-11-2012 12:51 PM

What's up with all the people dissing on the 370z? I love my car! Yes the overheating oil thing pisses me off but that's really it. I'll fix that soon. Little bit snappy when you pitch it sideways but that can be fixed too. I'm pretty tall and really appreciate being able to fit into a rear wheel drive sports car. But I fit very nicely in the 240z too.

they're just jealous of the sexiness of the Z.

edit: removed brz/fr-s comment. wrong thread :)

TreeSemdyZee 04-11-2012 01:01 PM

If they're going to a smaller engine, I vote for a Formula 1 engine. They're only 2.4 liter. :icon18:

UNKNOWN_370 04-11-2012 02:22 PM

Prediction:

3.0 v or inline 6 with turbo option.
NA will be 320hp with 290lb tq_ weight 2900lbs_ 0-60 in 5.0 sec 1/4 in 13.4
Turbo = 390hpwith 370lb tq_ weight 3100lbs_ 0-60 in 4.0sec 1/4 in 12.5
Redline 7800 for turbo and 7500NA
I'll take the turbo. Thanks:tup:

Nismo89 04-11-2012 03:17 PM

The VQ has pretty much reached its end.......If you have driven a first gen 3.0 VQ that was in the 95 Maxima you would see why alot of these claims of harshness etc etc exist. It was buttery smooth etc etc then.

Nismo89 04-11-2012 04:02 PM

AND make the "blindspot windows" actually visible.

brucelidat 04-11-2012 04:04 PM

doesn't need to be smaller, lighter would be nice though

kidkotic2001 04-11-2012 07:27 PM

Smaller Engine means no deal for me. I am happy with my 09.

Zenki370 04-11-2012 08:13 PM

If the car gets slower, this will be my last Z. In the 6 cars Ive owned in my life, each one has been quicker than the next one... and handled better as well. Must continue the trend unless I need a backseat.
