Why not just follow what Nissan says (they know a thing or two about the Z, I think )? Straight from the Owner's Manual:

Quote:
During the first 1,200 miles (2,000 km),
follow these recommendations to obtain
maximum engine performance and
ensure the future reliability and economy
of your new vehicle.

Failure to follow these recommendations
may result in shortened engine
life and reduced engine performance.

. Avoid driving for long periods at constant
speed, either fast or slow. Do not run the
engine over 4,000 rpm.
. Do not accelerate at full throttle in any gear.
. Avoid quick starts.
. Avoid hard braking as much as possible.
Of course, I bet every Z that's ever been test-driven at a dealer has had the above recommendations violated...

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the break-in period for the 370z is 1200 miles under 4k rmp. Just keep it under 4k and I'm sure you'll be fine.

It's overrated. Once the oil is warmed up, feel free to bring up the RPMs.

Ask 100 people about breaking in a motor and you'll likely get 100 different ideas. I'll wager that if you bought a new car that had been test driven it would have been rode hard and put up wet. If any of you have taken a test drive in a new Z did you baby it or "let's see what this thing will do"? I usually vary my speed for the first 500 miles or so but don't baby the car otherwise. Bought my first brand new car in 1962 and have owned many more since then. I've never had an engine failure or problem.

also, use painter's tape on the front bumper and side mirrors to protect from debris.

My advice to anyone getting a new vehicle. As soon as mine arrives, i have the 3M painters tape waiting (plus, i've used the same brand different sizes for detailing). Wal-mart has the best price on 3M painters tape, get a clearbra asap. I will be getting a clearbra as soon as i fully detail her of course, just light polishing, nothing too abrasive ( I have light and heavy abrasive polishes) which i doubt i'll need considering the whole dealership knows not to touch her when she arrives, no sealant or wax of course until after clearbra and tint, even before the last two steps another wash will be needed. To the OP, thanks for your service

I think I saw that Ebay listing and read about the storage etc. If it is the one I read it was listed 35000 or best offer. Good luck. Thanks for your service and sacrifices.

I bought my car in Chicago and drove it 584 miles back to KC/KS. Just varied speed and made some stops along the way. Break in miles has some merit but I think some hype it a little. I guess currently at 1100 miles it is only slightly broken in.

I think I saw that same listing.....it sounded like a bit of a scam to me. Glad to hear that was legit.

If I could make a suggestion, you might want to have your oil changed locally before the trip... if it is on the original oil after 2 years it has to be mud. Might not want to risk a long journey home that way. Even the gas could be a problem if it has been sitting... might want to fill up to get some new gas mixed in.

clearly the solution is to push the car back

congrats on the new purchase and enjoy the drive

and as far as the break in, pretty much try not to stay at one rpm for extended periods of time and don't rev it past 4-5k
