I apologize. I didn't mean to be pretentious. Yes crime does happen everywhere. I had no idea my statement about the neighborhood would cause this reaction. I accept and admit that my statement was ignorant. I will do my best to think before posting so as to prevent further ignorant statements on my behalf.

OP- once again sorry to hear about your rims. Hopefully this won't happen again, or you will be able to prevent this from happening again. Best of luck

Default Thefts In Nice Part of Town

I too live in Chgo (Lincoln Park), in what is supposed to be a "good part" of town, and my Jeep was vandalized for my radio, my neighbor's space tire was stolen from his SUV and a few days ago my other neighbor had his home broken into.

I think its save to say that crime happens everywhere. However VIOLENT crimes are, for the most part, isolated in bad neighborhoods. I suppose we can be grateful for that.

How is it that wheel locks can be hacked?

M

McGards are totally useless if the guys are quick to remove the wheel. I have a socket that if you smack it with a rubber mallet hard enough, you literally make an imprint onto the lugnut and then remove it with ease. The only fault is if the thief want to rick 2 or 3 loud knocking noises in the neighborhood and that's it.

Any shop uses a one size bigger socket and smacks it on to get it to fit. Everyone who owns a honda (stereotype ftw) knows this...honestly in my younger days, my friends would go out an do this and if there was wheel locks or a blue light in the dash (viper alarm) they wouldn't even try. Sometimes the best way to stop it is to just make it a hassel. No need to buy a viper alarm, u can just take ur car to a shop and change the factory alarm light from red to blue.

Very true. Anything to slow them down and they'll pass you by and go to the next guy. Locking lugs, The Club (even on a car with an immobilizer, it's dumb, but it's a big visual and adds just one more layer for them to get through), aftermarket alarm light even if it's fake, etc. I unfortunately know from experience. Thieves suck.

Is there somewhere else you can park for a while? They might come back.

Im sorry to hear that. People can just get so low these days. maybe a good set of locking lugs might help on your next set of wheels. Good luck. keep us posted

Not to hijack, but there's nothing pretentious about being surprised when an area known for NOT having crime has crime, which is what I assume rooster was reacting to. That's different from thinking there NEVER could be crime in a nice area (any area really)

The reference to Craig's list made me think it would be a good idea to put some kind of identifying mark on the wheels. Even if a set showed up and the police checked you would still have to be able to identify the wheels as the ones stolen from your car. Any ideas on a good way to put some kind of ID mark on the wheel without creating a rust spot?
