why no supercharger whine

ok i asked this on another thread, but i didnt wanna thread jack so here is a new one. why is there a big push in the industry to have quieter superchargers? call me simple stupid but if i saw an add for a supercharger kit that read "screamin loud when u get on it" i would wanna buy that instantly. i mean listen to kenne bells on cobras. if that sound doesnt get u goin then nothin will. and i kno that we dont work off a roots style blower on the z's, but my buddy had a vortech on his mustang and that thing made a pretty sweet whine.

lets get the blower sound back!

(ranting at the risk of sounding like a muscle car loving redneck)

PapoZalsa 12-21-2011 11:56 AM

Maybe new technology or the desire to have the car with a SC "sleeper"....

kenchan 12-21-2011 11:57 AM

honestly speaking im not a fan of the supercharger whine noise.

TerribleONE 12-21-2011 11:58 AM

+1 on this... Kenne bell's sound BITCHEN

menzzer37 12-21-2011 11:58 AM

I love the whine too. I say bring on the noise!

edub370 12-21-2011 12:00 PM

if you can watch "snake bite cobra" on youtube and not want a supercharger whine then you need to get your pulse checked.

*cough cough* vendors chime in at any time

im all for the supercharger whine, but you have to understand that not everybody wants to be loud. there are those who choose to be discrete.

if you think that everybody wants to be just like you or have the same interests as you, then you need to get your pulse checked. :tiphat:

theDreamer 12-21-2011 12:22 PM

I have a GTM stage 1 SC and you can hear the whine, not nearly as loud as the Cobra which I have ridden in but it is there.

edub370 12-21-2011 12:52 PM

i thought gtm was going for the super stealthy quiet thing?

The system is much quieter than the American V8 SC kits, but it is definitely not silent.
It all depends on what your level of 'loud' is really, I like the V8 SC sound but the GTM kit is a nice blend of whine, BPV and exhaust.

edub370 12-21-2011 12:59 PM

true. i guess we really cant get that loud whine without going to a roots style blower (old stillen 350z kits)

Dreamer, I haven't been following the drama lately. How is the Stage 1 GTM holding up for you? Any issues?

It is doing great, car is in the shop currently because some lady hit the rear fender. :shakes head:

tibal 12-21-2011 01:37 PM

Im with u Bromontana! On the Maxima, the V2 is just so much more "tame" in a sense compared the the V1. I have buddies that run the V1s and if in a parking lot, everyone.. i mean everyone thinks there is some sort of big rig coming! :P With the V2, yes it sounds great still, but it is far less noisy. Guess thats the price for more efficient performance maybe?! :happydance:

i dont think anyone has bought a supercharger for their attention grabbing 2 door sportscar to "be descrete". i mean it's not like our 370's are "descrete" as it is.

But we dont go around flooring the gas pedal screaming, im supercharged bitches!....i drive my 370z just like i drive any car on the street. Just cause i have a 2 door sports car it doesnt mean im going to drive around like a straight up douche.

To each his own....if you like people to notice you for how loud your car is then go for it.

by the way, when people are shopping around for a supercharger kit to buy...i doubt that the first question they ask is how loud can this setup be. im almost positive that the first question they ask is how reliable is this kit or how much power can this kit put out.

Edub is right in that our car isn't discrete naturally. This doesn't, however, mean all of us want it to scream for even more attention either though by having it extra loud. I personally would prefer to be undercover with SC power. I agree with Nostud, my questions will be how much power and how reliable. If I was going to drop for a SC, I would get the GTM over the Stillen because it is quieter actually. Everyone wants different things so it's hardly right saying we all want to be super loud attention grabbers, especially since we'll probably get more attention form cops than anyone else...

brucelidat 12-21-2011 03:35 PM

Some people want to be loud and that's cool too as long as you also get power gains. I'm just not one of them. And though I believe your car better be fast and capable if it is loud (slow cars with fart cans that are loud just to be loud annoy me), it doesn't mean you should drive like a douche in normal city driving either. Be safe and respectful and fire it up on the track. Don't make people hate Z drivers.

ok:

a)just because the sound of a good supercharger whine doesnt mean i drive around like an a-hole everywhere.

b) i never said that was the deciding factor... HOWEVER some people do enjoy the sound. hell look at youtube, its full of video's just dedicated to supercharger wine. the people that enjoy it arent any more obnoxious than the people that dont. its strictly taste.

i am just saying that right now our options are quiet and quieter. i want something that gives more of an audible distinction over NA motors. having an SC'd car is something that i would be proud to show off/listen to

for instance: could u imagine if Whipples next advertisement went something like this:

"HEY Mustang owners, are you tired of all the sound your supercharger makes. We know you love your sc'd cobras and gt500's. but why deal with all that ridiculous racket! well worry no more...

Whipple now introduces it's Whisper Series supercharger. Our main objective was to keep this system silent, so we will be replacing all new noisy blowers with the whisper series.

Take that cobra from rated R to PG.

It's family fun for everyone!"

..i can imagine their sales numbers if they only started offering quiet sc's...

point being, that some people absolutley love that sound

got it, from reading your OP i was under the impression that you were only after a loud winding noise. sorry if i came out a bit strong.

edub370 12-21-2011 03:56 PM

Hah hey its ok. nah i jsut want something audible under load. not ridiculous at idle or cruising speed

UNKNOWN_370 12-21-2011 04:32 PM

F**k That... I want a TT setup with Big Blow off valves that make babies cry when I pull up to the light from them being so DAMN loud!!! There, I said it. Ain't no more to it.i:nutswinger:
:icon18::driving:

Jordo! 12-21-2011 06:52 PM

The whine is more of a roots blower sound.

There's several different designs of superchargers; Some are louder than others. The Roots type blowers are the loudest. The Roots 871 is the loudest according to our local supercharger expert Scott.

KillerBee370 12-21-2011 09:50 PM

Is this about whine or power?

Reminds me of my Evo days when Evo's and STI's used to practically compare how loud their blow off valves were. Pretty ricey IMO.

Edit: better yet, forget FI altogether and start with suspension/brakes.

Fully built twin turbo with open dumps and nitrous here. All hidden, even my stereo. No kit and some plain jane 5zigen FNs. I like the sound of a racecar just as much as the next guy, but im not an attention whore, so I keep it discrete and drive slow. If I nail it...you'll know whats up...otherwise, you would never notice me. Thats the way I like it.

KingZee 12-21-2011 10:11 PM

I'd really prefer a very quiet 100 more hp...when people decide to f around I'll just blow their doors off and they'll think again before messing with another Z

You've got open dumps and you're able to "keep it discreet"? Sound clips or it didn't happen! :roflpuke2:

If you drive normal then you can most definitely keep the noise down. Even going easy it's not quiet but it's not obnoxious.

I like loud but that mustang sounds like a vacuum cleaner to me.

happytheman 12-22-2011 06:50 AM

Wow! That was actually very quiet unless it was getting banged on!

This was what I was thinking when it came to open dumps:

Well, that would an open exhaust. :D

Having open dumps on just the waste gates will only get loud when the waste gates open. :driving:

I have the Berk exhaust with 3" down pipes and my car is only slightly louder than stock as long as I stay off the boost.

I have heard Old School's car and if he wants he can keep it quiet, but whenever I am around it always seems to be so loud for some reason. :stirthepot:

Snakes709 12-22-2011 10:45 AM

think most of you are missing the point of the sc kits avalible for the 370z. The whine is usally from a roots or twin screw type supercharger, the ones on the z is centrifical supercharger and theres a reason for that. Do you honestly believe u can fit a roots blower ontop of the engine and have it under the hood? its a matter of space.

She is a bit throaty at idle...but the way I drive...no one sees my coming. Dual 3" aam has a nice sound at cruise...when the wastegates open...traffic parts. Lol
