Default quick oil filter question

Is the oil filter for our Z the same as for most other Nissans? Just wondering since I am going to bring it along with my motor oil to my mechanic for a $15 oil change this Sunday. Since 370s aren't too common, I don't want to bring it in and have him not have an oil filter for it ready. If it's the same oil filter you find in most Nissans, then I am sure he will have some on hand. If not, I might stop by the dealership to pick one up beforehand.

bruce- i think it's time you learned something about your car and do the change yourself.

there are many filters compatible with our cars. even the honda filters for my Fit would fit. lol

I installed the oi cooler and oil cooler block-off plate. But I don't have the tools to get the car up for the oil change. And for only $15, it's not worth the hassle for me. But yes, I know very little and have very little auto mechanic skills. I just want to make sure I don't get some crappy filter that doesn't work as well put on because he doesn't have the right one. Is there any real diff between say your honda one you mentioned for example vs the appropriate nissan one?

Not really. The filteration might be different but they basically function the same way.
I'd be more concerned if he has the crush washer or not. Not that you need to replace it all the time.

Z1 has a good buy on an oil change kit for our cars. Comes with 5 quarts unicorn blood, filter, and new crush ring. Might be worth checking out

cool, thanks. the washer should be fine. This is only my second oil change after the break in oil change and the washer was replaced in that one along with adding a magnetic plug.

bruce, here is a good thread for an oil change. A few after market oil filters are also mentioned here.

I've read the oil change thread. i was just wondering if the Zs oil filter was a common standard one that my mechanic should have on hand when I go in since I don't think many 370s o there. Kenchan has confirmed that it is so thanks. That's all I wanted to know.

that's a good DIY, though. it's where I got the magnetic drain plug from. if I had the tools and the inclination, I would def use that DIY for reference.

The oil filter is used across more then a few V6 models. I know the same
filter is used on the 3.5 for example since the wife drives a 06 G35 and
its the same as the Z filter

As for changing it yourself, of course do-able as people suggest but its a bit of a pain. BTDT, and while under warranty dealer is getting it. Pinch welds are
delicate for jacking, the under pan has a ton of screws, just easier with a lift.

Just to beat a dead horse, many mechanics don't stock a full range of auto products on the chance one will roll up for service. Many will use companies like NAPA or the such to supply them with the common parts like oil filters for more uncommon filters or 'special' requests.

You should be able to request, or just pick up yourself from AutoZone or Advanced Auto, a Purolator like that AK thread above uses. The ones that fit the 370z and GTR are a common stock item. They're like $5

Your safe play is to buy your own filter and take it to the mechanic -- due to the fact that many mechanics stock low-end filters and you really do not know what you are getting. BTW: I consider the stock Nissan filter to fall in the low-end category.

K&N/Mobil One are the same filter essentially -- made in the same factory and each do a nice job. WIX are also very effective. Some go for Purolator PureOne, but they are more restrictive. Personally, I prefer the K&N because of the welded nut on the top of the filter that facilitates tightening and removal without having to use a strap or jaws type wrench.

Just my 2 cents.

^didnt know that about K&N. Interesting. I use Mobil One. The filter size for our cars is M108 but the M110 is longer and it fits as well.
