Baby Seats

Hey guys,

Do any of you have kids? If so, how do you go about it with our cars and baby seats? I noticed there is an anchor in our "trunk," but I don't know. I don't have any kids yet, but I don't plan on getting rid of my car for a Maxima once I do have kids.

Just wanted your thoughts on if you put a baby seat in the passenger seat.

Thanks!

6MT 09-14-2011 10:01 AM

IMHO, the 370 is no place for babies.

Sibze 09-14-2011 10:03 AM

In Canada you would not even be allow to have a child seat in the 370z

Lmao!

shadoquad 09-14-2011 10:07 AM

There should be instructions in the owner's manual. But if you have more than one, someone's riding in the trunk or on the roof.

joshs09slvrZ 09-14-2011 10:08 AM

Ha...I would never trade my car in for a Maxima. I know it's not safe to have a child seat in the front with the danger of the airbag...but sometimes you don't have a choice. My wife has a Rogue...so I guess if I have to drive somewhere with a kid...she'd have to drive my car...

ClemsonWill 09-14-2011 10:22 AM

Or just buy a third car to tote the kid when you need to. Who wants a baby spitting up all in their Z anyways. I have a little civic that I tote my 8 month old son around in.

Nick911sc 09-14-2011 10:25 AM

The air bag would be disabled when the baby is in the car(Unless your baby is morbidly obese)

If that's the case, I would have been killed by an airbag :(

Baby in a Z definitely sounds like a bad idea to me. Take it in the Rogue and keep it safe.

joshs09slvrZ 09-14-2011 10:49 AM

Yeah...I just wanted to see what others were doing. I like the idea of buying a third car like a Civic or something. I won't lie though...my little terrier pup loves going on rides (don't worry...I have a towel on the seat so they won't get dirty haha).

Ok, In Ontario i'ts 100% true.

You CANNOT put a babyseat in the front seat of a car

Sounds like a winning plan

Ok, may have to correct myself. My parents drive for Children's aid, they say you are not allowed but I cannot find on the MTO website saying no front seat.

My bad :tiphat:

:iagree: Here in Red-neck country, you can.

cossie1600 09-14-2011 11:23 AM

there is a reason cars come with an airbag override, its so you can have babies in front. its not illegal when you have a two seater.

a baby right next to you, cant be more safe than that

Perhaps...if your car has a back seat, child seat must be placed there.

joshs09slvrZ 09-14-2011 11:52 AM

Looks like this link has some good info.

Child restraint laws

For Florida specifically, it just says that a rear facing car seat should not be placed on a seat with an active airbag. To that, I ask this question, for cars with curtain side airbags...how safe is a child in the back seat? My guess is no safer than in the front seat...

Also pulled this up:

http://sheriff.org/safety/carseat.cfm

It's for Broward County specifically so I'm wondering if child safety laws differ from county to county...?

scottIN 09-14-2011 12:05 PM

When I was a baby (early '70s), my parents would have just tossed me in the back & let me crawl around. Seriously. I remember riding int he back of our Corvette all the time when I was probably 6 or 7 or so. And there was nothin' like sleeping in the rear window shelf of the Cadillac during a road trip.

...and somehow I survived...

Side curtain airbags don't deploy with the same kind of force

Maybe not...but do you really want any kind of airbag hitting your kid? I guess if you really think about it...the only safe spot would be in the center of the back seat or something.

...side airbags dont "hit" they roll down. thats why theyre called curtain airbags. theyre there to catch you. they dont shoot out AT you

Ah...that would make sense. Never had a car with anything other than front airbags so I wouldn't know.

shadoquad 09-14-2011 12:48 PM

babies are a nice alternative to spare tires, too. They're still podgy and malleable at that age, and they won't remember any of it happening.

they make great buffers lol

Skeeterbop 09-14-2011 01:00 PM

IIRC the manual said that the airbag is disabled when using the child seat anchor points.

A couple of Z owners with super-skinny gf's (under 100lbs) said that the airbag is deactivated when their girlfriends are in the passenger seat.

Well if anything happens...nothing a good plastic surgeon can't fix. :roflpuke2:

fuct 09-14-2011 01:30 PM

under a hundred.......nothing a few hamburgers cant fix!

somatic 09-14-2011 01:34 PM

they dont need airbags, cause theyre airheads lol

joshs09slvrZ 09-14-2011 01:48 PM

Lol...it's not so much the weight...it's where the weight is distributed. My wife is only 120 and will activate the airbag if she's sitting all the way back in the seat. If she slouches down with her butt at the front of the seat...then it gets turned off...

shadoquad 09-14-2011 01:50 PM

I'm just saying, if you're dating Jabba the Hutt's sister, your airbag knows what's up.

We have a little guy, turning 2 next month. The first thing I noticed when I was looking at the Z was the child seat anchor in the back. I thought great, I can take the little guy cruising. My wife saw it at the same time I did and said "NO" before I could even get the idea out of my mouth. So he has to sit in my DD (a Pontiac G6) and Mom's DD (a slammed HHR). Sucks to be him. Every time we pull into the garage and get him out of one of the DD's he always points to the Z and goes VROOM VROOM. ha ha

At least he know which car is the the fast one!!

Crazy4Z 09-14-2011 02:21 PM

The instructions are easy. I have a son that is 2 years old. I have the recaro baby seat. Seat perfectly for the passenger seat. Just make sure to adjust the passenger seat to the baby seat. There are sensors on the passenger that can read if you have a baby seat on. Those sensors can detect and shut off the front airbags of the car. The anchor in the back is for the the long latch on the back of the baby seat connect it to the anchor and tighten it. Its another safety device other than the seat belt to secure the baby seat on the passenger seat. Ill take pics and post later.
