Top Gear Z vs Z4

YouTube - TopGear - Bmw Z4 and Nissan 370z Review + Stig Laps

Also checked for reposts. None thus far. Though the bimmer is FI. Its a much fairer review than others concocted on here. We have two, 2 seat coupes with v6 motors. The Z is way cheaper at base. Kool vid. Check it out.

yes, but we've all seen the video, and the goal is to keep the discussion in one thread.

So its ok to keep rehashing mustang prowess 2 dozen times but not ok to see our ZED twice??? Ok I'll buy that.:wtf2:

Well in case anyone missed it? Here it is... hope someone enjoys??? :)

have at it. Starting a whole bunch of new threads is technically against forum rules, but it's not my job to enforce that.

Just trying to put in some new stuff in here. topics that are way more Z focused. The social Z threads have boiled down to talking about other cars. That's kool but when other cars become more of the main topic than our cars. It gets corny. Yeah I started 5 new threads today. All extremely different topics. All directly Z related. The only thread that's any fun but is already dragged to hell is what have we done witth our Z's today? Then the mod sections. But those threads are made like once a month. Most are old and get miniscule posts these days. I don't even think people go there anymore. I was just tryin to help get enthusiasts enthusiastic again.
In a bad economy and rapid social change. These convos are fun. At least imho. And the threads I posted are doing rather well. I get a few party poopers but most guys are talking about there cars and not someone elses. I like hearing about what you guys do as Z owners. Not what Joe shmo pulls in his audi, vette or mustang.

If forum rules means I can't create multiple conversations about the Z, then so be it. I call it a stupid rule but hey... its not my forum. Last thread I make for a looong azz time.

AK or whoever can close my threads and we can go back to talking bout mostly about other cars and less about Z's again.

Red__Zed 05-14-2011 01:42 AM

this thread might be more up your alley. Conversation stays mostly Z-centric.

Pretty cool. I've never seen it before.

I've driven both and in my opinion the Z4 is a more luxurious and class defining vehicle than the 370z. However, in terms of overall performance and cost, the 370z wins hands down. If I had an extra $10k+ to buy the BMW with the options and aftermarket upgrades I wanted, then I would. Both cars are nice.

i test drove a Z4 a couple months ago and it didnt seem to have nearly as much power as the 370. the interior was a lot better though imo. black exterior with extended red leather interior.

See I went from a 46k G37s sport with all options. Intell cruise, nav, moonroof etc... I sold it to pay some medical bills. I opted to sell a car than pull 35k out the bank. I could've went and bought the G37ipl with that sick azz color which is a Real Black Cherry, unlike the garbage version on the Z. But I chose the base sport 7at to mod and challenge myself and the tech guys that will be helping me to make a great, fast and reliable FI 7at that kicks *** on the track.
Between the stillen valve body, GTM torque converter and the 7at's variable sport modes and infinite gear ratios. I believe the automatic Zed can be a benchmark performer in spite its transmission being non-dct. Operationally, the cvtcs is just as good if not better due to the gear ratio advantage. What sux is torque converter drone. But performance over sound.

I chose a lightly used one that I carefully picked in order to save extra money and apply more mods. With 4.800 miles and it being a year one car. I took that instead. I noticed the year one cars are the ones that hit the mid-high 4's to 60, while other years do more low 5's. It seems the originals are less bogged down and more brisk. I guess all those tsb's on the 10 and 11 models slowed the car down. The one I purchased has no ecu drone so I got lucky.

So now I'm in the process of ordering my first 4 mods. I'm really excited.

Mike 05-14-2011 11:48 AM

I've got both. Totally different cars, but I think the z4 s35 would smoke the z in a drag race. It's my wife's car so I don't drive it much, but I discovered launch control on it and it freaking flies off the line.

There is also "Internet Pride" for doing this and beating you over the head about it...:rofl2: Always somebody in the bunch to get on the high horse.

The Z never had a chance against the Beemer on Top Gear. Clarkson is notorious for his Europhile bias when it comes to cars. He's never really liked the Z.

I did. Top Gear is one of my favorite shows, so I saw this when it first came out. It kind of shocked me when I first saw it that, after all the good things he said about the Z, he ended it with JeffBlue's sig:

"So what we're saying is: buy the BMW because it's slower, less exciting, more expensive and less well-equipped."

Now that may have been just a bit of a toss-off for a funny, but when the Z beats a car in nearly every category and you choose its opponent... well, sorry, but that's just not playing fair! :)

And please, the Z4 does NOT look better than the 370Z, yet the Top Gear crew was all gah-gah over it. To me, at least, the Z4 looks :superghey:

It's interesting how differently people can interpret things, eh? :)

No sweat, if that's how you read it. For me, at least, I interpreted it as them preferring the BMW no matter how the Z performed. And I think they were a little too pleased by the looks of the BMW, certainly more than those of the Z. They were literally gushing over the BMW.

I was also a little offended by the fact that the Z had to share the spotlight at all!

If you FI the Z, a lot of the harshness in the engine would resolve. Then people will say the Z motor sounds too sedate. When comparing asian to german, people will always nitpik the asian while letting a lot of things slide on the german car.

Turbos change the whole sound of the car. It actually quiets down NA cars a bit, engine will sound smoother

Pretty sure a turbo does not make an engine sound any smoother.

Hambone1 05-16-2011 08:42 PM

Unknown, are you thinking of some of the stock FI engines that are on the market maybe?

UNKNOWN_370 05-16-2011 08:46 PM

YouTube - GTM 370Z TWIN TURBO CUSTOMER TEST DRIVE

In this video, the first thing customer notices, his engine is smoother and a little quieter. Then he notices the adrenaline of his turbo. This is quite a normal effect for a v6.

Drive a 328 and a 335I. At WOT the 328 is louder.

No speakers at the moment, I'll take your word for it. I'm by no means an expert on turbos so I don't doubt you without listening to it

the smoothness he is referring to is the power delivery, by the way, and then the suspension at the end.

I'm no expert either but I have owned a couple of turbocharged cars. I've driven a few turbo and non turbo as well. I used to own a GN and I remember my 3.8 being smoother than the v8. I just had that turbo whistle.
